The Special Education Teaching Assistant works under the direct supervision of the special education teacher and under the broad supervision of the building principal. This role involves providing assistance to students to help develop their independence, carrying out lessons, managing behavior, and maintaining a functional learning environment. The assistant will also support the special education teacher with clerical tasks, student supervision, and data collection. A key aspect of the role includes promoting responsible behavior and social interactions, maintaining classroom routines, and potentially accompanying students on off-site programs. The position requires monitoring student needs and behaviors at all times, reporting unusual incidents, and maintaining confidentiality. The assistant must be proficient in Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) techniques, including de-escalation and therapeutic restraint, and must maintain current certification. Documentation of significant events and providing for special needs of individual students, including physical assistance, are also part of the responsibilities.
