About The Position

Liberty LEADS is a NYC-based college access program that has served over 200 underrepresented children between 5th and 12th grade each year since 1989. Liberty LEADS was founded to empower youth by helping them attain higher education, embrace leadership engagement, and create a positive future for themselves and others. Liberty LEADS provides an alternative learning environment in which young people can experience success as learners and increase their ability and motivation to graduate from high school and seek entry into postsecondary education and/or meaningful employment. The program is guided by the principle that all children have gifts, talents, and great potential and can contribute to one another's social and academic growth. STEAM in the City is a summer program for current 5th and 6th graders (rising 6th-7th). STEAM in the City combines science, math, art, language arts, and social justice to connect concepts to students’ lived experiences. The focus of our summer experience will be Science and Art using a project-based experiential learning model where the educators will deliver engaging, fun and exciting curricula to our students by utilizing the outdoors to facilitate learning. This model uses a co-teaching - 2 teachers total with one in each discipline- Science/Art. The teachers will focus on science skills necessary for a successful Fall 2026 academic year. The STEAM program will include planning and implementing outdoor programming including hiking, walking and other physical activities to connect the classroom with nature. Liberty LEADS is seeking a passionate, team-oriented Teacher’s Assistant to join our program. The Assistant will collaborate with two Head Teachers to engage students with the "STEAM in the City" curriculum. In this role, you will support all aspects of student engagement and classroom management. The ideal candidate enjoys working with students aged 10 and 11 and is committed to fostering a positive learning environment.

Requirements

• College Students majoring in a related field (Liberty LEADS alum strongly encouraged to apply)
• Demonstrate knowledge of child development
• Experience working with children/adolescents a plus
• Reliable WIFI and computer access
• Attend mandatory curriculum planning session with co teachers and advisors (dates tbd)
• Attend mandatory June 2026 Orientation (will be held on a Saturday June 13, 2026)

Responsibilities

• Support the Steam in the City curriculum and help students engage with the material.
• Under the guidance of the Head Teachers help students with individual tasks and group work being responsive to their individual needs.
• Help build a collaborative and cooperative classroom and teaching team
• Attend and participate in daily supervision meetings with teachers and Liberty LEADS advisors.
• Lead the classroom in activities as needed.
• Help with daily classroom morning set-up and evening clean-up.
• Assume coverage roles with greeting students upon arrival, lunch support, accompanying class on trips and recess
• Other responsibilities as assigned
