About The Position

The University of Alabama Honors College is seeking to hire two faculty members at the rank of Assistant Professor of Honors. One position is STEM-related, and the other is an open specialty. These are full-time, non-tenured, renewable contract appointments. The faculty will be expected to teach a variety of honors classes and will have opportunities to develop and teach seminar classes based on their expertise. The College, guided by its strategic plan 'Honors Forward,' aims to cultivate students who are exceptional thinkers, citizens, and leaders. The 'Honors Forward' initiative emphasizes smaller classes, one-on-one faculty interaction, first-year experience programs, experiential and community-engaged learning, and research/creative activity culminating in a signature project. This hiring initiative is part of the College's efforts to expand resources and enhance the experience for its over 7,000 students.

Requirements

  • An earned doctorate or other terminal degree in Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Technology, Engineering, Bio/Tech-ethics, or other STEM-related field (for STEM position).
  • An earned doctorate or other terminal degree appropriate to their discipline (for open specialty position).
  • Degree must be completed by the start of the appointment.
  • Teaching experience at the college/university level.
  • Skills and techniques necessary to manage highly collaborative, student-centered learning.
  • Ability to facilitate rigorous dialogue across differing perspectives, both in and out of the classroom.
  • Ability to build creative, transdisciplinary syllabi.
  • Ability to foster dialogue among students.
  • Ability to help individual students hone their skills as critical and creative thinkers, citizens, and leaders.

  • Contribute to the overall academic and co-curricular life of the college.
