About The Position

The Department of Curriculum and Instruction (CIED) in the College of Education and Health Professions at the University of Arkansas is seeking candidates for a nine-month Teaching Assistant Professor of Elementary STEM Education, beginning August 16, 2027. This full-time, non-tenure track position will support undergraduate and graduate programs in elementary education, including the STEM education concentration within the Masters of Arts in Teaching program in Elementary Education and the K-6 STEM graduate certificate. The successful candidate will join a vibrant team of faculty in a department recognized for excellence in teaching, research, faculty development, and student success. CIED faculty engage in integrated STEM education with established partnerships with local school and community organizations, including Scott Family Amazeum and Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, to support field-based experiences, outreach initiatives, and collaborative STEM programming. Opportunities for community-based service include participation in STEM nights, teacher professional development, and statewide STEM initiatives. The successful candidate will play a central role in preparing future elementary teachers to design and implement integrated STEM instruction that meaningfully connects science, technology, engineering and mathematics as well as other core disciplines. Responsibilities include teaching four courses per semester at the undergraduate and graduate levels with a focus on integrated STEM methods, elementary math education, engineering and technology education, and hands-on, project-based learning experiences. The candidate will be expected to facilitate highly interactive, integrated, design-based coursework in which students develop technical competencies using various tools. Additional responsibilities include mentoring and advising students; contributing to course and curriculum development aligned with state and national STEM standards; and supporting the continued growth of the elementary education program. Through teaching, research, and service, this position supports the University’s 150 Forward priorities of student success, research excellence, and an employer-of-choice environment. This is an in-person position. On-campus presence is an essential function of this position. Extensive in-person engagement in activities such as office hours, student advising, collaborative work, and departmental, college, and university committee meetings is required to advance student success, departmental effectiveness, and the mission of the college and the university.

Requirements

  • Earned doctorate from a nationally recognized and accredited institution of higher education in Curriculum and Instruction, Elementary Education, Integrated STEM Education, Elementary Math Education, Engineering Education, or a closely related field conferred by the start of employment
  • Evidence of and/or promise of highly effective teaching in university-level coursework related to elementary integrated STEM education, elementary mathematics education, and/or technology and engineering education
  • Evidence of productive service and/or potential to actively contribute to service to the program, department, institution, and profession related to elementary integrated STEM education, elementary mathematics education, and/or technology and engineering education
  • Potential to earn recognition from peers as demonstrated through professional practice, service to professional organizations, outreach, and/or curriculum development related to elementary integrated STEM education, elementary mathematics education, and/or technology and engineering education in elementary settings

Nice To Haves

  • Experience designing and facilitating hands-on, project-based learning environments
  • Demonstrated ability to integrate STEM instruction in elementary content and design developmentally appropriate, interdisciplinary learning experiences.
  • Demonstrated evidence of experience with learning projects with elementary engineering and technology integration, including tools such as 3D modeling, fabrication technologies, or makerspace environments
  • Experience working with or building community-based partnerships with schools and other community STEM organizations such as museums
  • Experience supporting pre-service teachers through clinical practice, field experiences, or mentoring
  • Evidence of engagement in scholarship of teaching and learning, practitioner-focused publications, or STEM education outreach
