About The Position

UCP Long Island is a not-for-profit agency dedicated to advancing the independence, productivity, and full citizenship of individuals with cerebral palsy and other disabilities. With over 75 years of experience, we are committed to 'Creating Life Without Limits for People With Disabilities!' Our special needs school in Commack is seeking a long-term leave replacement teacher. Teachers at UCP are responsible for the education of each student on their caseload across all major developmental domains. This role involves providing appropriate individualized instruction tailored to each student's Individualized Education Plan (IEP) and collaborating effectively with the clinical team.

Requirements

Minimum Bachelor's degree (B. A.)
Master of Science required from a four-year college or university.
NYS Teacher Certification.
Ability to demonstrate classroom management by utilizing effective behavioral interventions.
Ability to identify student needs through ongoing evaluation (formal/informal) and program monitoring.
Ability to create an appropriate and challenging learning environment that meets each student’s needs.
Ability to apply the curriculum effectively and utilize a range of strategies and assessments to differentiate instruction.
Ability to use effective English in oral and written communication.
Ability to create a clean and safe working environment.
Ability to maintain competency in the environment of care to provide a functional and safe environment for students and staff.
Ability to create a safe nurturing environment conducive to learning.
Ability to maintain a pleasant working relationship with all colleagues in their professional capacity.
Ability to carry out case management responsibilities according to current school/agency policies and procedures.
Ability to develop and implement daily lesson plans in accordance with the NYS Learning Standards.
Ability to complete NYSAA data-folios and attend trainings as required by NYSED guidelines.
Ability to compile and maintain accurate data collection records for students, based on goals and objectives in relation to the students IEP.
Ability to develop and implement individualized education plans and ensure student’s program is developed and implemented based upon the total needs of the child and his/her family.
Ability to complete program documentation in accordance with school/department requirements.
Ability to respect the private nature of the special knowledge they have about each student and their families and use that knowledge only in the students’ best interests.
Ability to submit written reports in timelines established by department supervisor, as specified in policies and procedures.
Ability to ensure records are kept properly; notes on team meetings, areas in need of follow-up, etc.
Ability to ensure the team operates smoothly and consistently, and that information is clearly and efficiently communicated within the team.
Ability to collaborate effectively with other professionals in the best interest of student.
Ability to consult with other members of the treatment team to assemble information consistent with the needs and capabilities of each student; integrates the most appropriate educational program into students’ overall program.
Ability to ensure parent is knowledgeable about the child’s program.
Ability to ensure the teacher aide(s) is knowledgeable about each students program.
Ability to ensure that communication to parents is coordinated and integrated.
Ability to partner with parents to enhance the student’s educational program and to promote student learning.
Ability to participate in appropriate staff meetings/team meetings as required.
Ability to participate in the reporting and development of student IEP goals at district meetings as required.
Ability to assist in performing frequent daily lifting of individuals with disabilities (ages 2-21). Individuals may weigh approximately twenty-five through one hundred and twenty-five pounds, and can easily require two and three-man maneuvers to lift.
Ability to supervise classroom staff and volunteers.
Ability to nurture the intellectual, physical, emotional and social potential of students in their class.
Ability to directly supervise teacher aides.
Ability to carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.
Ability to train employees; plan, assign, and direct work; assist Assistant Principal in appraising performance; address complaints and resolve problems.
Ability to supervise College Students and observational volunteers in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.
