About The Position

St. Joseph Catholic School seeks a dynamic and knowledgeable High School Science Teacher to join our faculty. This educator will teach Chemistry and Physics, with the potential to instruct Honors and Advanced Placement courses, (and others if needed in accordance with course outlines) depending on experience and program needs. As a college-preparatory Catholic school, St. Joseph seeks a teacher who can inspire curiosity about the natural world while helping students develop strong analytical, laboratory, and problem-solving skills. The ideal candidate brings both depth and breadth in the sciences, thrives in a collaborative faculty environment, and sees teaching as both a profession and a ministry of intellectual and personal formation. Ministerial Character Catholic schools in the Diocese of Austin are canonically obedient to the Bishop and assist him in fulfilling his ministry and canonical obligations. Pastors, presidents, and principals serve as leaders of the schools to make Christ's mission present and enduring in the schools. In order to fulfill Christ's mission, the school leaders employ suitable, chosen collaborators, sharing with them Christ's mission and entrusting to them various responsibilities. Positions employed in this School help extend the ministry of the School leaders in particular ways as outlined in the job description. The employee in this position is closely connected to and assists the School leaders in the performance of their ministry and, therefore, engages in ministry for the Church.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Science or Science Education (Chemistry, Physics, or related field required)
  • Demonstrated ability to teach Chemistry and Physics
  • Strong laboratory background and commitment to hands-on scientific instruction
  • Excellent communication and classroom management skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a small-school environment
  • Must meet the minimum requirements for teaching field as set forth by the Diocese and TCCED.
  • Must submit an Ethics and Integrity in Ministry (EIM) Application for Ministry within the first week of employment, participate in an EIM Basic abuse prevention training workshop within 30 days of submitting a complete Application for Ministry, and maintain EIM compliance during the entire term of employment.
  • Must meet staff development guidelines as set forth by the Diocese and school administration.
  • Must complete Religion Certification Part 1 within two years of the date of hire, completing a minimum of 25 hours each year.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and deliver engaging and intellectually rigorous lesson plans that clearly communicate scientific principles while fostering curiosity, critical thinking, and analytical reasoning.
  • Break down complex scientific concepts into practical examples and real-world applications, helping students connect abstract ideas in Chemistry and Physics to observable phenomena.
  • Utilize consistent checks for understanding, including formative assessments, questioning strategies, laboratory investigations, and demonstrations, to ensure students are mastering key concepts.
  • Design and facilitate hands-on laboratory experiences that encourage hypothesis formation, experimentation, data analysis, and scientific reasoning.
  • Create a classroom environment that promotes active inquiry, thoughtful discussion, and intellectual confidence, encouraging students to explore the sciences with curiosity and persistence.
  • Build strong relationships with students by cultivating a classroom culture rooted in respect, encouragement, and intellectual challenge, recognizing that teaching in a Catholic school is also a ministry that supports the formation of the whole person.
  • Maintain complete, accurate, and timely academic records, including consistent updates to the gradebook so students and families have clear visibility into progress and expectations.
  • Communicate regularly and professionally with parents and guardians in ways that build trust, understanding, and partnership, supporting families as collaborators in their child’s education.
  • Utilize the school’s curriculum framework to develop coherent units of study and a thoughtful scope and sequence, while demonstrating the creativity and resourcefulness to expand beyond the textbook.
  • Enrich the student experience by helping students encounter the beauty and relevance of scientific discovery, using demonstrations, interdisciplinary connections, and real-world examples.
  • Contribute to the continued development of the high school science program, including laboratory design, curriculum development, and potential expansion of Honors or AP coursework.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across disciplines to develop interdisciplinary learning opportunities. For example, collaboration between Physics and Mathematics faculty to support a rocket engineering lab hosted at the school’s athletic complex, allowing students to apply mathematical modeling and physical principles through real-world experimentation.
  • Encourage advanced scientific engagement through science fairs, research projects, STEM competitions, or independent student inquiry.
  • Participate actively in the life of the school community, including all Masses, faculty meetings, professional development, school events, and student activities.
  • Support and uphold the mission and values of St. Joseph Catholic School, modeling integrity, intellectual curiosity, and service in all interactions with students, families, and colleagues.
