About The Position

UCP Long Island is a not-for-profit agency dedicated to advancing the independence, productivity, and full citizenship of individuals with cerebral palsy and other disabilities. With over 75 years of experience, we are committed to 'Creating Life Without Limits for People With Disabilities!' Our special needs school in Commack is seeking a long-term leave replacement teacher. Teachers at UCP are responsible for educating students in all major developmental domains, providing individualized instruction aligned with their Individualized Education Plan (IEP), and collaborating with the clinical team.

Requirements

Minimum Bachelor's degree (B. A.)
Master of Science degree required from a four-year college or university.
NYS Teacher Certification.

Previous teaching experience is preferred.

Responsibilities

Demonstrates classroom management by utilizing effective behavioral interventions.
Identifies student needs through ongoing evaluation (formal/informal) and program monitoring.
Creates an appropriate and challenging learning environment that meets each student’s needs.
Applies the curriculum effectively and utilizes a range of strategies and assessments to differentiate instruction.
Designs, lays out, and manages the classroom space to facilitate learning.
Uses effective English in oral and written communication.
Creates a clean, safe, and nurturing working environment conducive to learning.
Maintains competency in the environment of care to provide a functional and safe environment for students and staff.
Provides guidance and direction in maintenance and hygiene routines.
Maintains a pleasant working relationship with colleagues.
Carries out case management responsibilities according to current school/agency policies and procedures.
Develops and implements daily lesson plans in accordance with NYS Learning Standards.
Completes NYSAA data-folios and attends required trainings.
Compiles and maintains accurate data collection records for students, based on IEP goals and objectives.
Develops and implements individualized education plans, ensuring the program meets the total needs of the child and family.
Completes program documentation in accordance with school/department requirements.
Respects the private nature of student and family information and uses it only in the students’ best interests.
Submits written reports within established timelines.
Ensures records are kept properly, including notes on team meetings and areas needing follow-up.
Ensures the team operates smoothly and consistently, with clear and efficient communication.
Collaborates effectively with other professionals in the best interest of the student.
Consults with other members of the treatment team to integrate the most appropriate educational program into students’ overall program.
Ensures parents and teacher aides are knowledgeable about each student’s program.
Coordinates and integrates communication to parents.
Partners with parents to enhance the student’s educational program and promote learning.
Participates in required staff meetings/team meetings.
Participates in the reporting and development of student IEP goals at district meetings.
Assists in performing frequent daily lifting of individuals with disabilities (ages 2-21), who may weigh 25-125 pounds, potentially requiring two or three-person maneuvers.
Responsible for day-to-day supervision of all classroom staff and volunteers.
Responsible for nurturing the intellectual, physical, emotional, and social potential of students in their class.
Directly supervises teacher aides.
Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.
Responsibilities include training employees, planning, assigning, and directing work, assisting the Assistant Principal in appraising performance, and addressing complaints and resolving problems.
Supervises college students and observational volunteers in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.
