About The Position

This position involves teaching academic classes to an adult incarcerated population at Souza Baranowski Correctional Center. The role requires utilizing research-based practices and current instructional methods to ensure effective teaching. A strength in ESL is preferred. The teacher will work with the Education Division and administration to deliver specialized instruction in a secure setting, manage student records, administer standardized tests, and track student progress. The position also involves identifying and recruiting potential participants, scheduling testing, determining eligibility for educational programming, and maintaining waitlists. A comprehensive understanding of DOC policies and procedures is expected, along with collaboration with internal and external professionals to achieve division goals. Professional conduct and adherence to institutional rules are paramount, including prompt reporting of security-related matters.

Requirements

  • Possession of appropriate Teacher's Certificate issued by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
  • No felony convictions.
  • No history of sexual abuse in a prison or other institution.
  • No conviction of engaging or attempting to engage in sexual activity facilitated by force, overt or implied threats of force or coercion, or if the victim did not consent or was unable to consent or refuse.
  • No civil or administrative adjudication of engaging in the described sexual activity.
  • No incidents of sexual harassment that would preclude contact with incarcerated individuals or residents.

Nice To Haves

  • Working knowledge of educational tests and assessments.
  • Ability to work with incarcerated individuals, teaching staff, and administration.
  • Experience teaching ESL.

Responsibilities

  • Teach academic classes including Reading, Writing, Math, Science, and Social Studies.
  • Utilize research-based practices, current instructional methods, and materials for effective instruction.
  • Teach in a correctional setting and interact with an adult incarcerated population.
  • Work with the Education Division and administration staff to deliver specialized instruction.
  • Complete student attendance daily and update student case plans as required.
  • Award Earned Good Time and complete performance ratings and time-sensitive documentation.
  • Complete required training hours within the fiscal year and maintain a current teaching license.
  • Administer standardized testing to students (TABE, TABE CLAS-E, HiSET, HiSET qualifying exams).
  • Maintain student education files, including purging, processing incoming/outgoing files, and updating documentation.
  • Track EGT for academic boosts.
  • Identify and recruit potential inmate class participants.
  • Schedule incarcerated individuals for academic testing and determine appropriate placement.
  • Determine student eligibility for educational programming.
  • Maintain and review educational program waitlists.
  • Utilize an informed understanding of current educational assessments.
  • Maintain a record of professional development and DOC trainings attended.
  • Illustrate a comprehensive and current knowledge of DOC policies and procedures.
  • Engage in Division priorities to enhance strategic goals.
  • Collaborate with other professionals to contribute to the goals of the Division.
  • Interact and communicate with staff and incarcerated individuals professionally, maintaining appropriate boundaries.
  • Report any security-related matters to the supervisor promptly.
  • Manage the assigned classroom in a manner consistent with institutional rules and regulations.
  • Perform any other duties assigned.
