About The Position

This is an 11-month Teacher Specialist position which requires 20 additional duty days beyond the identified 190 teacher calendar days. Teacher Specialists are required to work one additional hour per day beyond the teacher schedule. Position is eligible for the Teacher Specialist stipend. The role is to provide assistance to special educators and general educators in meeting federal and state requirements, adapting curriculum, and utilizing specialized techniques to meet the needs of students with disabilities.

Requirements

  • Hold or be eligible for a Maryland Advanced Professional Certificate or Advanced Professional License endorsed in special education.
  • Five years of successful experience in the special education field.
  • Knowledge and understanding of IDEA.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as a resource in developing and implementing Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) strategies and specialized education programs for students with disabilities.
  • Instructs, models, and coaches Verbal Behavior (VB) teaching procedures to include Errorless Teaching and Error Correction procedures to teachers and paraprofessionals.
  • Provides support in developing and implementing behavioral supports and instructional control.
  • Conducts fidelity checks of teaching procedures and student programming.
  • Provides assistance to special education teachers to enable them to develop and implement Individual Education Programs for students with disabilities.
  • Supports staff and students within the Extended School Year (ESY) program.
  • Participates in Individual Education Program (IEP) Team meetings.
  • Provides consultant services to school personnel working with students with disabilities requiring ABA supports.
  • Provides technical support in the implementation of IDEA.
  • Facilitates the transition of elementary students with disabilities into secondary programs.
  • Synthesizes ideas gleaned from conference attendance in order to share information, as appropriate in professional development activities.
  • Demonstrates a positive attitude and uses effective skills in human relations with students, teachers, administrators and members of the community.
  • Develops a knowledge base of effective strategies that facilitate inclusive education to ensure students with disabilities access both county and state curriculum.
  • Performs other work-related duties as assigned.
