About The Position

This post will initially be based in the post-primary department, General Subjects. The role involves exercising general professional duties and particular duties as circumstances require, under the reasonable direction of the principal. This includes planning and preparing courses and lessons, teaching assigned pupils, and assessing their progress. It also involves promoting the general progress and well-being of pupils, providing advice and guidance, communicating with parents and external bodies, and participating in relevant meetings. The teacher will also be involved in assessment and reporting, staff and professional development, maintaining discipline and health and safety, preparing pupils for public examinations, and contributing to the review, development, and management of school activities and administration. The role requires adherence to the Teachers’ (Terms and Conditions of Employment) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1987.

Requirements

  • Hold a teaching qualification which meets the requirements for recognition to teach in grant-aided schools in Northern Ireland.
  • Hold a degree in Primary Education.
  • Demonstrable experience of developing positive relationships for learning with children and young people.
  • Demonstrable experience of working with a range of professionals to meet the needs of children and young people with Special Educational Needs.
  • Demonstrable experience of and/or continuing professional development in the use of specialist equipment, facilities or skills to meet the needs of children and young people with Special Educational Needs.
  • Demonstrable experience of using digital media/technology to enhance teaching and learning.
  • Be registered with the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (GTCNI) before taking up post.
  • Knowledge of Northern Ireland Curriculum.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Safeguarding and Child Protection policy/practice.
  • Knowledge of the SEND Code of Practice and its implications.
  • Current working knowledge of a range of teaching strategies to effectively meet the learning needs of children and young people with Special Educational Needs.
  • Knowledge and understanding of current assessment methods used with children and young people who have Special Educational Needs.
  • Knowledge of approaches to promoting positive behaviour for learning eg. Restorative Practice.
  • Knowledge of Information Technology systems such as digital classroom tools/media and the use of tablets/mobile technologies.
  • Effective teaching and classroom management skills to inspire and challenge pupils to raise achievement.
  • Proven ability to provide a supportive, inclusive learning environment.
  • Ability to use initiative, solve problems and be flexible.
  • Ability to seek and avail of opportunities to increase his/her own professional competence as a teacher.
  • Ability to work collaboratively to promote positive relationships with pupils, colleagues, parents and the wider community.
  • Ability to work as an effective member of a team, and to motivate self and others.
  • Evidence of how your experience and approach to work reflect the School’s Values/ethos.

Nice To Haves

  • Demonstrable experience teaching in a Special School or Special Provision in Mainstream.
  • Hold a valid Team Teach certificate.

Responsibilities

  • Exercise general professional duties as circumstances require, under the reasonable direction of the principal.
  • Perform particular duties as reasonably assigned by the principal.
  • Plan and prepare courses and lessons.
  • Teach assigned pupils according to their educational needs, including setting and marking work.
  • Assess, record, and report on the development, progress, and attainment of pupils.
  • Promote the general progress and well-being of individual pupils and assigned classes or groups.
  • Provide advice and guidance to pupils on educational and social matters, further education, and future careers.
  • Make records of and reports on the personal and social needs of pupils.
  • Communicate and consult with the parents of pupils.
  • Communicate and co-operate with external bodies as approved.
  • Participate in meetings arranged for the purposes of professional duties.
  • Provide or contribute to oral and written assessments, reports, and references relating to pupils.
  • Participate in staff development and performance review schemes.
  • Review teaching methods and programmes of work.
  • Participate in arrangements for further training and professional development.
  • Advise and co-operate with the Principal and other teachers on curriculum, teaching materials, programmes, methods, and pastoral arrangements.
  • Maintain good order and discipline among pupils and safeguard their health and safety.
  • Participate in meetings relating to the school curriculum, administration, organisation, and pastoral arrangements.
  • Participate in arrangements for preparing pupils for public examinations and assessing them for such purposes.
  • Contribute to the selection and professional development of other teachers, including induction and assessment of probationary teachers.
  • Co-ordinate or manage the work of other teachers.
  • Take part in the review, development, and management of curriculum, organisation, and pastoral functions of the school.
  • Participate in administrative and organisational tasks, including the management or supervision of support staff and the ordering of equipment and materials.
  • Attend assemblies.
  • Register pupil attendance and supervise pupils before, during, or after school sessions.
  • Supervise and teach any pupils whose teacher is not available, subject to certain conditions regarding cover.
