About The Position

This position is responsible for planning, developing, implementing, and instructing programs such as remedial reading, math, language arts, and other programs to meet the education requirements of inmates with special learning needs. The role involves conducting specialized classes, providing resources to coordinate educational competencies with social adjustments, and identifying, evaluating, and implementing evidence-based, scientific-driven, systematic instruction to effectively meet individualized student goals. A critical aspect of this role, like all correctional institution employees, is maintaining the security of the institution, with correctional responsibilities preceding all other required duties.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is Required.
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited or pre-accredited institution that included or was supplemented by supervised student teaching, and at least one course in each of the following areas: general psychology, human development, history and/or philosophy of education, and teaching methods at the learning level of the position to be filled.
  • For secondary school teaching positions, applicants must also have had at least 24 semester hours (or equivalent) of course work in each of the principal fields of instruction.
  • At least 24 semester hours (or the equivalent) of course work in special education that included at least one course covering the teaching of exceptional students and courses in the appropriate field(s) of specialization.
  • Three years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree OR Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree.
  • OR At least one year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade level, which has equipped the applicant with the particular qualifications to perform successfully the duties of the position, and which is typically in or related to the position to be filled.
  • Examples of qualifying experience include: designing, developing, and implementing a variety of lessons, curricula and instructional materials based on assessment data, knowledge of teaching strategies, and learning styles for special learning needs students; developing, administering and analyzing a variety of individualized formal and informal diagnostic special education and literacy tests, identifying deficiencies and developing prescriptive educational programs; designing a record-keeping system to evaluate special learning needs students, analyzing data presented, developing and implementing adaptations to ensure students' successful progress through course work; utilizing prescriptive teaching techniques and accommodation strategies and constructing extra audio/visual aids to reinforce skills taught, and other motivational tools and approaches unique to instructing special learning needs students.
  • OR Combination of graduate level education (in excess of the amount required for the next lower grade) and specialized experience may be used to meet total experience requirements.
  • Must upload legible transcripts as verification of educational requirement if education is a requirement/substitution for specialized experience.
  • Transcripts MUST be uploaded and electronically linked from USAJOBS at the time you apply and MUST include identifying information to include School Name, Student Name, Degree and Date Awarded (if applicable).
  • All academic degrees and coursework must be completed at a college or university that has obtained accreditation or pre-accreditation status from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
  • Maximum entry age of 36 for original appointment to a position in a Bureau of Prisons institution (unless exempt due to prior federal law enforcement coverage).
  • Appointment is subject to satisfactory completion of a pre-employment and panel interview, urinalysis, physical, and background investigation.
  • All applicants are subject to, and must satisfactorily pass all screening requirements in relation to National Crime Information Center (NCIC) and credit check.
  • All applicants not currently working in an institution will be required to complete a qualification inquiry regarding convictions of misdemeanor crimes of domestic violence in order to be authorized to carry a firearm.
  • Successful completion of the "Introduction to Correctional Techniques", three-week training course at Glynco, Georgia is required.
