About The Position

This permanent teaching position is initially based in the post-primary department, focusing on General Subjects. The role involves exercising general and particular professional duties as a teacher, including planning, teaching, assessing, and reporting on pupils' development, progress, and attainment. The teacher will promote the general progress and well-being of assigned pupils, provide advice and guidance on educational and social matters, and communicate with parents and external bodies. Responsibilities also include participating in staff development, reviewing teaching methods, and co-operating with colleagues on curriculum development. Maintaining good order and discipline, safeguarding health and safety, and participating in school meetings are also key aspects. The role includes preparing pupils for public examinations and contributing to the review, development, and management of school activities, including curriculum, organization, and pastoral functions. Administrative and organizational tasks, such as managing support staff and ordering materials, are also part of the role. Teachers are expected to register attendance, supervise pupils, and attend assemblies. Specific working hours and days are outlined, including classroom teaching time and total working hours per year. The role also involves supervising and teaching pupils whose regular teacher is unavailable, with specific conditions regarding cover in different school enrollment scenarios. The post-holder is expected to promote good relations, equality of opportunity, and comply with equality legislation.

Requirements

  • Hold a teaching qualification which meets the requirements for recognition to teach in grant-aided schools in Northern Ireland.
  • Hold a degree in Primary Education.
  • Minimum of 2 years' demonstrable experience teaching pupils in a special school setting.
  • Demonstrable experience of developing positive relationships for learning with children and young people.
  • Demonstrable experience of working with a range of professionals to meet the needs of children and young people with Special Educational Needs.
  • Demonstrable experience of and/or continuing professional development in the use of specialist equipment, facilities or skills to meet the needs of children and young people with Special Educational Needs.
  • Demonstrable experience of using digital media/technology to enhance teaching and learning.
  • Be registered with the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (GTCNI) before taking up post.
  • Knowledge of Northern Ireland Curriculum.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Safeguarding and Child Protection policy/practice.
  • Knowledge of the SEND Code of Practice and its implications.
  • Current working knowledge of a range of teaching strategies to effectively meet the learning needs of children and young people with Special Educational Needs.
  • Knowledge and understanding of current assessment methods used with children and young people who have Special Educational Needs.
  • Knowledge of approaches to promoting positive behaviour for learning (e.g., Restorative Practice).
  • Knowledge of Information Technology systems such as digital classroom tools/media and the use of tablets/mobile technologies.
  • Effective teaching and classroom management skills to inspire and challenge pupils to raise achievement.
  • Proven ability to provide a supportive, inclusive learning environment.
  • Ability to use initiative, solve problems and be flexible.
  • Ability to seek and avail of opportunities to increase his/her own professional competence as a teacher.
  • Ability to work collaboratively to promote positive relationships with pupils, colleagues, parents and the wider community.
  • Ability to work as an effective member of a team, and to motivate self and others.

Nice To Haves

  • Demonstrable experience of assisting with and/or leading the role of Learning Support Co-ordinator in a special school setting.

Responsibilities

  • Exercise general professional duties as directed by the principal.
  • Perform particular duties as reasonably assigned by the principal or employing board.
  • Plan and prepare courses and lessons.
  • Teach pupils according to their educational needs, setting and marking work.
  • Assess, record, and report on pupil development, progress, and attainment.
  • Promote the general progress and well-being of individual pupils and assigned classes/groups.
  • Provide advice and guidance to pupils on educational, social matters, further education, and future careers.
  • Make records and reports on personal and social needs of pupils.
  • Communicate and consult with parents of pupils.
  • Communicate and co-operate with external bodies approved by the employing authority and Board of Governors.
  • Participate in meetings for the purposes described above.
  • Provide or contribute to oral and written assessments, reports, and references for pupils.
  • Participate in staff development and performance review schemes.
  • Review teaching methods and programmes of work.
  • Participate in further training and professional development.
  • Advise and co-operate with the Principal and other teachers on curriculum, teaching materials, programmes, methods, and pastoral arrangements.
  • Maintain good order and discipline among pupils.
  • Safeguard pupils' health and safety.
  • Participate in school meetings related to curriculum, administration, organization, and pastoral arrangements.
  • Participate in arrangements for preparing pupils for public examinations and assessing them.
  • Record and report on assessments for public examinations.
  • Participate in arrangements for pupils' presentation for and supervision during public examinations.
  • Contribute to the selection and professional development of other teachers, including induction and assessment of probationary teachers.
  • Co-ordinate or manage the work of other teachers.
  • Take part in the review, development, and management of curriculum, organization, and pastoral functions.
  • Participate in administrative and organizational tasks, including supervision of support staff and ordering/allocation of equipment and materials.
  • Attend assemblies.
  • Register pupil attendance and supervise pupils.
  • Supervise and teach any pupils whose teacher is not available, subject to specific conditions regarding cover.
  • Promote good relations, equality of opportunity, and pay due regard to equality legislation.
