About The Position

The High School Counseling Program provides education, prevention and intervention activities, which are integrated into all aspects of students’ lives. The program teaches knowledge, attitudes and skills students need to acquire in academic, career and social/emotional development, which serve as the foundation for future success. The goal is for all students to achieve optimal personal growth, acquire positive social skills and values, set informed career goals and graduate high school by having reached their full academic potential to become productive, contributing members of their community and society.

Requirements

  • MA DESE School Counselor Licensure, Grades 5-12
  • Hold a master’s degree or higher in school counseling or the substantial equivalent
  • Experience working in an urban educational setting
  • Has working knowledge of ASCA and MASCA frameworks and standards
  • Experience in a collaborative educational environment and shared decision-making modeled on Professional Learning Communities is highly desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Academic advising for all students, including development of academic plans, establishing personal goals, creating schedules, and monitoring progress towards graduation.
  • Delivery of school counseling core curriculum in classrooms to support students in identifying strengths and weaknesses, goal setting, building career awareness, and researching college and career options.
  • Provide short-term counseling services through small group and individual counseling, including support with social skills, executive functioning, conflict resolution, peer mediation, stress management, coping skills, and newcomer transitions.
  • Use data to identify gaps in achievement, needs, and interventions, and refer students to programs for academic support, 504 planning, and other opportunities.
  • Provide comprehensive postsecondary advising (college, career, alternative programming), develop postsecondary plans, expose students to various programs, and collaborate with other postsecondary planning programs.
  • Support students and families from all backgrounds in the college-going process by promoting equity and access.
  • Provide ongoing communication with families regarding progress, enroll new students, orient them to the school, and facilitate parent nights on topics such as financial aid, postsecondary transition planning, adolescent development, and study skills.
  • Facilitate parent workshops on postsecondary planning and financial aid support.
  • Support student recruitment and enrollment to CollegeBoard offerings (PSAT/NMSQT, SAT, AP classes).
  • Provide MCAS support through educational proficiency planning and opportunities, and student and parent outreach.
  • Develop plans to address over- or underrepresentation of specific groups in programs such as Special Education, English Language Programs, Honors classes, Advanced Placement classes, Dual Enrollment and Early College, and Pathways.
  • Collaborate with other support staff, teachers, family members, and the community to support students' personal/social/emotional needs.
  • Collaborate with family, school, and community members to support students in meeting academic, personal/social, college, and career readiness goals.
  • Continue to work on the content and delivery method of the curriculum to provide equitable access for all students and families.
  • Maintain professional knowledge and skills for working in a diverse and multicultural work setting through professional development opportunities.
  • Works closely with the Coordinator of School Counseling.
  • Additional responsibilities assigned by the Principal.

  • All teachers are members of the Chelsea Teachers Union (CTU).
  • The length of the school day is 6.5 hours, but subject to longer hours for schools with extended day.
