About The Position

A Teaching Assistant, or Teacher Assistant, is responsible for helping Teachers complete daily tasks within a classroom environment. Their duties include leading lessons or small group activities for students, grading student assignments in accordance with the Teachers’ grading criteria and providing individual guidance to students with learning disabilities or behavioral challenges.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Minimum 2 years of working with children or supervising children in a school or daycare setting.
  • Knowledge of working with immigrant youth.
  • Proficiency in English and Spanish both oral and written.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills and genuine sensitivity to children of diverse cultural backgrounds

Responsibilities

  • Ensure that each child entering the program is properly assessed through a series of educational assessments.
  • Helping Teachers with lesson preparation, including collecting materials and setting up equipment
  • Reviewing lessons or lectures with students on a one-on-one basis or in small groups
  • Supervising students in class, between classes and during recreation periods and field trips
  • Tracking attendance, grading assignments, and calculating grades
  • Giving extra help to students who need special accommodation or are struggling with a concept.
  • Assisting students with special learning requirements, including disabilities or English as a second language students
  • Collaborating with the Teacher to identify students’ issues and recommend solutions.
  • Observing state, school and class rules and regulations
  • Prepare age appropriate academic and social programs tailored to the needs of each child.
  • Teach a basic education curriculum in a group setting which includes basic Math and beginning English.
  • Design, assess and supervise the education program for children.
  • Organize and prepare classroom environment, making sure that the classroom is conducive to learning and all children are safe.
  • Maintain positive, supportive, and professional relationships within the Abbott House community.
  • Prepare reports as needed.
  • Participate in weekly treatment team meetings.
  • Always supervise the group.
  • Attend and complete all mandated Abbott House and ORR training on a timely basis.
  • Assist with supervision of children during recess, school excursions.
  • Function as a Bus Aide in the vehicle when children are transported to and from school or during excursions whenever needed.
  • Any other related duties as required.
