About The Position

This role involves exercising general and particular professional duties as a teacher in a school, under the reasonable direction of the principal. Key responsibilities include planning and preparing courses and lessons, teaching assigned pupils, and assessing their development. The teacher will promote the general progress and well-being of pupils, provide guidance on educational and social matters, and communicate with parents. They will also participate in staff development, review teaching methods, and contribute to the development of courses and teaching materials. Maintaining good order and discipline, safeguarding health and safety, and participating in meetings related to the school's curriculum and organization are also crucial. The role includes preparing pupils for public examinations and participating in administrative and organizational tasks. A full-time teacher is available for 195 days a year, with no more than 190 days involving classroom teaching. The annual working hours are 1,265, exclusive of time spent off-site preparing and marking lessons or traveling. Classroom teaching is limited to 25 hours per week in primary or special schools. Teachers are entitled to a 30-minute break between 12 noon and 2:00 pm (or 2:30 pm for nursery units). The role also involves supervising and teaching pupils whose regular teacher is unavailable, with specific conditions regarding cover duration and class size.

Requirements

  • Hold a teaching qualification which meets the requirements for recognition to teach in grant-aided schools in Northern Ireland.
  • Minimum of 1 year’s paid demonstrable experience of teaching at either key stage one or key stage two to achieve positive learning outcomes.
  • Demonstrable experience of using a range of effective classroom strategies to provide support and challenge children and young people of all abilities, including those with Special Educational Needs.
  • Be registered with the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (GTCNI) before taking up post.
  • Knowledge of Northern Ireland Curriculum.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Safeguarding and Child Protection policy/practice.
  • Knowledge of the SEND Code of Practice.
  • Knowledge of a range of teaching strategies to meet the learning needs of pupils.
  • Knowledge of Information Technology systems such as digital classroom tools/media and the use of tablets/mobile technologies.
  • Knowledge of current assessment methods to inform teaching.
  • Effective teaching and classroom management skills to inspire and challenge pupils to raise achievement.
  • Proven ability to provide a supportive, inclusive learning environment.
  • Ability to use initiative, solve problems and be flexible.
  • Ability to work collaboratively to promote positive relationships with pupils, colleagues, parents and the wider community.
  • Ability to work as an effective member of a team, and to motivate self and others.

  • Demonstrable experience of monitoring pupil progress, performance, target setting and interventions.

Responsibilities

  • Participating in administrative and organizational tasks.
  • Managing or supervising support staff.
  • Ordering and allocating equipment and materials.
  • Attending assemblies.
  • Registering pupil attendance.
  • Supervising pupils before, during, or after school sessions.
  • Supervising and teaching any pupils whose teacher is not available, subject to specific conditions.
