About The Position

The San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) is seeking a Teacher of the Visually Impaired for the 2026-2027 school year. This role is responsible for providing specialized instruction and services to visually impaired students aged 3 through 21. The teacher will consult with students, parents, special and general education personnel, and sighted peers to help them understand the unique needs of visually impaired students and connect them with available resources. Key responsibilities include interpreting eye conditions and their educational implications, coordinating programs with various staff, assisting with environmental adjustments, obtaining specialized materials (large type, recorded, Braille), and providing instruction in areas such as low vision, Braille, assistive technology, daily living skills, and career/vocational education. The teacher will also collaborate on the identification process for students needing services, conduct functional low vision assessments, and may serve as a case manager. This position requires adherence to Special Education Services procedures, including developing assessment plans and holding IEP meetings within specified timelines, creating measurable goals, maintaining data logs, and performing other assigned duties.

Requirements

  • Hold or be pursuing a valid California Education Specialist Instruction credential in Visual Impairment.
  • Hold or be pursuing an English Learner certificate (CLAD or BCLAD).
  • Visually impaired teachers who are actively pursuing a CA teaching credential, which is anticipated to be cleared by the time of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Provide specialized instruction and services to visually impaired children/students 3 through 21 years of age.
  • Assist students, parents, and school personnel in understanding the unique educational needs and learning characteristics of visually impaired students.
  • Acquire information regarding local, state, and national resources in the education of visually impaired students.
  • Interpret the visually impaired student’s specific eye condition and its educational implications to staff and the student’s family.
  • Confer regularly with classroom teachers, other personnel, and parents to coordinate programs and services.
  • Assist in making environmental adjustments for students and improving practices and procedures.
  • Select and obtain large type, recorded, or Braille textbooks, supplementary materials, educational aids, and equipment.
  • Provide specialized instruction to students, school personnel, and parents in the use of educational aids and equipment.
  • Instruct students in the development and maintenance of skills related to visual impairment, including low vision, visual efficiency, concept development, academic skills, sensory/motor skills, communication skills (Braille, keyboarding, assistive technology), career/vocational education, social/emotional skills, and daily living skills.
  • Provide assistance to classroom teachers in academic subjects and activities that require adaptation or reinforcement due to visual impairment.
  • Consult and collaborate with school personnel regarding the identification process, including pre-referral, referral, assessment, and eligibility determination.
  • Monitor referrals and provide assistance for assessments.
  • Conduct functional low vision assessments.
  • Participate in IFSP/IEPIITP meetings for identified SPED students with visual impairments.
  • Serve as a case manager or service coordinator for students with no additional impairments, including conducting annual IEPs.
  • Share responsibility for initial and ongoing assessments, program planning, and scheduling with parents, students, teachers, and other personnel.
  • Schedule adequate time for assessment, instruction, planning, material preparation, travel, and conferences.
  • Maintain ongoing contact with parents to assist them in developing a realistic understanding of the child’s abilities, progress, and future goals.
  • Provide in-service training programs for school personnel, students, and community groups regarding the needs of visually impaired students.
  • Maintain a reference library of current professional materials.
  • Acquire information about current research, development, technology, and resources for visually impaired students.
  • Follow procedures established by Special Education Services regarding identification, re-evaluation, and dismissal processes.
  • Develop an assessment plan within 15-day timeline of receipt of written request of referral.
  • Hold IEP within 60-day timeline of receipt of signed assessment plan.
  • Develop measurable goals and objectives that are student-based in accordance with core curriculum and the District’s Content and Performance Standards.
  • Be prompt and sign in/out at all schools.
  • Notify sites and Special Education Office when absent.
  • Attend all meetings, workshops, and professional development activities as requested and authorized.
  • Perform additional duties and responsibilities as assigned or requested.
  • Dismiss students from vision services following Exit Criteria.
  • Develop (annually) and review (quarterly) IEP goals and objectives.
  • Maintain data log and record keeping of referrals, timelines, assessments, IEP and eligibility.
  • Maintain direct service and consultation logs.
