About The Position

Candor is seeking a passionate Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing to empower students and schools. This role is crucial in helping students who are deaf or hard of hearing achieve academic success, foster independence, and gain equitable access to their educational environment. The position emphasizes making a real difference while maintaining a healthy work-life balance within a supportive team environment.

Requirements

• A bachelor’s degree in Deaf Education, Special Education, or a closely related field is required.
• A valid Texas Educator Certification in Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) is required.
• Familiarity with special education laws, including the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), and understanding of the Individualized Education Program (IEP) process are essential.
• Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL) is required.

Nice To Haves

• A master’s degree in Education for Students with Hearing Impairments or a similar area is preferred but not required.
• Additional certifications in related areas, such as Auditory-Verbal Therapy, are a plus but not mandatory.
• Bilingual skills in additional languages are preferred but not mandatory.
• CPR certification is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with IEP teams to create and implement Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) that address the specific communication and learning needs of students with hearing impairments.
• Deliver targeted instruction in areas such as language development, auditory skills, and social-emotional learning, utilizing strategies that align with each student’s unique needs.
• Collect and analyze data to track students’ academic and developmental progress, adjusting instructional approaches as needed to meet IEP goals.
• Work closely with general education teachers, paraprofessionals, speech and language pathologists, audiologists, and families to ensure a cohesive support system for students across all educational settings.
• Advocate for and implement accommodations, modifications, and assistive technologies, such as FM systems, captioning, and visual aids, to ensure equitable access to learning opportunities.
• Prepare students for life beyond school by teaching skills such as self-advocacy, effective communication, and the use of adaptive technologies for post-secondary education, vocational settings, and independent living.
• Develop strategies to enhance students’ independence and self-confidence in school, home, and community settings, including teaching self-advocacy and problem-solving skills.
• Ensure students’ safety by addressing accessibility needs and teaching essential skills for navigating their environments effectively.
