About The Position

The Ohio Department of Youth Services (DYS) is seeking a dedicated Teacher (Mathematics) to join their team. This role is crucial in transforming and saving lives by supporting youth and empowering families and communities. DYS operates three juvenile corrections facilities and supports over 600 community programs across the state. The department's guiding principles emphasize valuing staff, treating everyone with respect, cultivating a trauma-responsive environment, providing excellent support and services, advancing inclusion, encouraging collaboration, and celebrating successes. This position is a qualifying employer for the federal Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program.

Requirements

  • Baccalaureate degree or less (for Teacher 1)
  • Baccalaureate degree & 20 additional quarter hrs. but less than master’s degree (for Teacher 2)
  • Master’s degree (for Teacher 3)
  • Master’s degree & 30 hrs. of post-graduate study (for Teacher 4)
  • Must successfully obtain Teacher Certificate or License prior to employment
  • Able to use current technology, including computers
  • Interest in professional growth and development
  • Knowledge of ODE Academic Content Standards and project-based personalized learning
  • Competent in curriculum building and program improvement in content, methods, and materials
  • Must complete a paid, mandatory 6 weeks of pre-service training (Week 1 at facility, Weeks 2-4 at DYS Training Academy in Orient, OH, Monday-Thursday, 7:00 am - 5:00 pm; travel, lodging, and meals provided. Weeks 5-6 on-the-job training at the facility.)

Responsibilities

  • Assess educational needs of youth
  • Develop and implement lesson plans to address those needs, including individualized assignments and training
  • Provide instruction with individual assistance
  • Counsel students concerning their performance, behavior and/or personal problems
  • Organize and/or monitor extracurricular activities if assigned
