About The Position

IC Imagine Charter School in Asheville, NC is seeking a licensed and dedicated Exceptional Children's teacher. This role focuses on planning, organizing, and presenting instruction to students with diverse communication, academic, and behavioral needs. The teacher will create instructional environments that foster learning, support educational and social development, and ensure progress towards IEP goals. A key aspect of this position is planning and implementing a comprehensive curriculum, including extended content standards, and demonstrating a strong understanding of the Policy Governing Exceptional Children. The teacher will also provide leadership, coordination, and facilitate the efficient operation of student IEPs, collaborating with department members and content area personnel to adapt curriculum and ensure access for students with Individual Educational Plans.

Requirements

  • Minimum Bachelor’s Degree
  • Valid North Carolina teaching license in Exceptional Children: Adapted Curriculum or related exceptional children area, or valid out-of-state teaching license in a comparable area to be converted to NC license within the first year of employment.
  • Extensive knowledge of the Child Find Process and Policies Governing Students with Disabilities.
  • Knowledge of and skilled in progress monitoring of academic, behavioral, and social/emotional skills.
  • Proficiency with GSuite.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships.
  • Possess strong time management skills.
  • Ability to prioritize workload and multitask in a busy environment.
  • Ability to evaluate instructional programs and select programs that match student instructional needs.

Nice To Haves

  • 1 year teaching experience preferred.
  • Experience writing Individual Educational Plans.
  • Familiarity or experience working within inclusive and self-contained classrooms.
  • Experience delivering structured literacy and math programs.
  • Proficiency with ECATS is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Understand the needs of students based on Individual Education Plan, Behavior Intervention Plans, and Health & Safety plans.
  • Assist in creating and implementing behavior intervention plans.
  • Create lesson plans, modify or adapt curriculum to make content accessible and align to grade level standards, Extended Content Standards, and IEPs.
  • Monitor progress of academic, behavioral, and social/emotional goals.
  • Communicate frequently in writing with parents and families of students.
  • Maintain regular and consistent communication with colleagues and administrators.
  • Coordinate and direct the activities of teacher assistants.
  • Plan and facilitate activities to support the transition needs of caseload students.
  • Manage instructional time efficiently.
  • Prepare for instruction by creating lesson plans, organizing materials, supplies, and equipment.
  • Use resources necessary to plan, implement, and evaluate instructional practices according to NC Standards.
  • Design instruction appropriate for all students that reflects understanding of relevant content and is based on continuous and appropriate assessment.
  • Support inclusive practices by modifying or adapting students with disabilities' work to ensure accessibility to grade level standards or extended content standards.
  • Provide instruction to students in separate, resource, and inclusion settings as indicated by each student’s IEP.
  • Collaborate with general education teachers, support staff, and the IC Imagine community to enhance educational opportunities for all students.
  • Follow processes in the faculty handbook, respond to emails promptly, keep attendance and goal progress monitoring data, and correspond regularly with families regarding student IEP goal progress and courses delivered in special education.
  • Perform additional duties including supervision during non-instructional time, attending after school events and meetings, and participating in enrollment activities.
  • Adhere to all legal and ethical requirements of the teaching profession and set a positive example.
