About The Position

Tacoma Public Schools is seeking a Grade 1 Teacher. This full-time position (1.0 FTE, 7.5 hours per day) is expected to start in October 2026. The salary is determined by preparation level and experience, with a pro-rated annual range from $73,549 to $144,248. The role involves planning, organizing, and delivering learning activities and experiences to help students reach their full potential intellectually, emotionally, physically, and socially. The teacher will support the curriculum, policies, and initiatives of the School/Building, School Board, District, and State to promote student achievement.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university with appropriate educational endorsement.
  • Valid Washington State teaching certificate.
  • Completion of all District-required trainings, as assigned.
  • Fingerprints and successful WSP and FBI background clearance/sexual misconduct clearance.
  • Knowledge of applicable Washington State and Federal rules and regulations.
  • Knowledge of subject matter/course content relevant to assignment.
  • Knowledge of and skills in using various formative and summative assessments.
  • Knowledge and skill in instructional principles, methods and techniques.
  • Skill in obtaining, clarifying and exchanging information.
  • Skill in critical thinking and problem solving.
  • Skill in attention to detail.

Responsibilities

  • Develops, plans, and strategizes a program of study based on student learning needs, meeting individual needs, interests, and abilities.
  • Creates a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for student maturity and interests.
  • Employs a variety of instructional techniques and media to engage students and provide opportunities for participation.
  • Assesses student growth regularly and provides progress reports.
  • Maintains and issues appropriate grades reflecting student achievement.
  • Refers students for evaluation by District Specialists as needed.
  • Provides guidance to promote students' welfare, educational development, and citizenship.
  • Strives to implement the District’s philosophy of education and instructional goals.
  • Assists administration in implementing District policies and rules governing student life and conduct.
  • Develops reasonable rules of classroom behavior and manages student behavior effectively.
  • Participates in the planning and evaluation of the school program and District curriculum development.
  • Prepares lesson plans for assigned classes and shows evidence of preparation.
  • Provides differentiated instruction and scaffolding of tasks.
  • Effectively uses learning time and guides the learning process toward curriculum goals.
  • Establishes clear objectives for lessons, units, and projects, and communicates them to students.
  • Establishes and maintains open communication with students, parents, colleagues, and community members.
  • Is available to students and parents for education-related purposes when required.
  • Conducts parent/guardian conferences and meetings to communicate student progress and interpret program rationale.
  • Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, District policy, and administrative regulations.
  • Utilizes multiple data elements (formative and summative assessments) to plan and adjust instruction.
  • Evaluates student learning and success criteria to modify and improve program effectiveness.
  • Uses Washington State approved student growth rubrics for tracking student growth data.
  • Takes necessary precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Provides for and promotes the care and protection of students and school property.
  • Supervises students in various school settings.
  • Effectively utilizes and provides access to community and District resources to enhance student learning.
  • Maintains and updates knowledge and skills through professional development activities and training.
  • Attends staff meetings and serves on staff committees.
  • Supervises Para Educators and other classroom office assistance as required.
  • Provides guidance and works with staff members.
  • Develops and maintains professional and collegial relationships with colleagues.
  • Collaborates with peers and administrators to improve student learning.
  • Supports appropriate conduct and performance of job duties.
  • Adheres to Tacoma Public School Board policies.
  • Contributes to the development of new teachers and student teachers.
  • Maintains files on latest curriculum guides.
  • Keeps updated on resources and methods and makes relevant changes to instructional plans and activities.
  • Performs related duties as assigned on a temporary basis.
  • Maintains regular, reliable, predictable attendance.
