Under the supervision of the principal, the Secondary teacher will provide guidance and instructional experiences that are academically and developmentally appropriate for each student assigned to that classroom as well as other programs as assigned. The teacher will accurately demonstrate knowledge of the content area, approved curriculum, and pedagogical skills. They will also demonstrate knowledge of students' interests, cultural heritage, and special needs. The role involves setting instructional outcomes, designing coherent instruction, and creating assessments. Establishing a culture for learning and managing classroom procedures, student behavior, and the physical space are key responsibilities. The teacher will communicate effectively with families and students, utilize questioning and discussion techniques, and engage students in learning. They will use assessment in instruction, select, use, and interpret evaluation data, and work productively with colleagues, parents, community members, and administration. Following board policies, taking precautions to protect equipment, and maintaining accurate records are also required. The teacher will attend faculty meetings, complete assigned duties, and leave adequate preparations for a substitute. They will use conflict resolution and public relations skills, and use diagnostic data to improve instructional programs. Availability to parents, students, administration, and peers outside the school day may be needed. Reporting suspected child abuse and neglect, being responsible for students on field trips, and acting as a good role model are essential. The teacher must understand and apply learning theories and participate in the development and implementation of individualized education plans (IEP's), individualized transition plans/SAT plans/504 plans, and Academic Improvement plans, including making necessary modifications. They must come prepared with data, grades, and all pertinent information to assist the team in decision-making. The teacher will account for assigned equipment and materials, serve as a member of the SAT as needed, and report unsafe conditions. Maintaining security for and administering state-required assessments, maintaining confidentiality, and being flexible and able to prioritize tasks are also part of the role. Reporting to work on time and working no less than 7.25 hours per day is required. The ability to deescalate students/parents by listening to their concerns before they meet with administrators is also a key aspect of the role. Other tasks as deemed appropriate and necessary by the principal may be assigned. The teacher may supervise educational assistants, practicum students, student teachers, and high school civic leadership.
