About The Position

The Nature-Based Learning (NBL) Coach will spearhead the integration of nature-based learning into the curriculum and daily activities of our school. The NBL Coach is responsible for designing, implementing, and managing nature-based learning programs for students in PreK-6 at the school and in the community. The NBL Coach will work closely with teachers, administrators, and students to develop and implement nature-based learning experiences that enhance academic achievement, foster environmental stewardship, and promote holistic student development throughout the school day. This role aims to connect students with nature, promote environmental stewardship, create community partnerships, promote whole child wellness, and enhance academic learning through nature-based learning.

Requirements

  • Valid NYS teaching certification for elementary education
  • Experience teaching elementary aged students (K-6)
  • Experience in nature based, environmental, or outdoor education
  • Knowledge of inquiry-based or project-based, and experiential learning
  • Ability to plan and deliver engaging, standards aligned lessons in both indoor and outdoor environments
  • Passion for connecting with children and nature
  • Comfortable working outdoors in a variety of weather conditions
  • Enthusiastic about hands-on student centered learning
  • Ability to supervise students safely in a natural environment
  • Experience maintaining outdoor learning spaces
  • Willingness to participate in ongoing professional learning related to outdoor education
  • Ability to integrate literacy, mathematics, science, social studies, and the arts into outdoor learning
  • Experience supporting diverse learners, including students with special needs and English language learners
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills with families, colleagues and community partners

  • Knowledge of local plants, wildlife, and ecosystems is a plus

Responsibilities

  • Working with teachers to build their nature-based learning skills and knowledge to increase the frequency and impact of NBL as a learning strategy.
  • Collaborate with educators to design nature-based lesson plans and activities aligned with academic standards across various subjects.
  • Engage students in hands-on activities and volunteer opportunities related to the care and management of the nature center, fostering a sense of responsibility and stewardship towards the natural world.
  • Maintain a responsible and nurturing relationship with various stakeholders and our program partners to develop and work towards a shared vision.
  • Establish and maintain outdoor learning spaces on and near school grounds, including the Freedom Outdoor Classroom, ensuring safety, accessibility, and environmental sustainability.
  • Provide coaching sessions and professional development workshops to support teachers in incorporating nature-based pedagogy into their teaching practices.
  • Promote environmental awareness and activism among students through projects, campaigns, and partnerships with local conservation organizations; for example, City Nature Challenge with the Seneca Park Zoo.
  • Collaborate with parents, community members, and external stakeholders to foster support for nature-based education initiatives and build connections between the school and the broader natural environment.
  • Develop methods for assessing the impact of nature-based learning on student outcomes, and use data to inform program improvement and decision-making.
  • Manage budgets, procure supplies, and maintain equipment necessary for nature-based learning experiences.
  • Oversee the operations of the school's nature center, including the care and maintenance of plants, tower gardens, and animals housed within the facility.
  • Develop educational programs and interactive exhibits for the school to enhance students' understanding of ecology, horticulture, and animal behavior.
  • Ensure the health and welfare of animals in the nature center, including feeding, cleaning, and providing enrichment activities, while adhering to ethical and legal guidelines for animal welfare.
  • Develop and write the monthly North Star Newsletter, manage and promote Nature-Based Learning initiatives through social media, and strengthen communication with students, families, staff, and community partners to highlight program impact and engagement.
