About The Position

Under the supervision of the Principal, the Aviation Teacher is responsible for instructing students in aviation technology and pilot training. This role involves teaching all phases of aviation technology, including Pilot-Ground and Air Traffic Control, engaging students in the study of aviation technology, and fostering an appreciation for the field and its practical applications in piloting. The teacher will demonstrate aviation technology concepts and techniques through hands-on instruction, and instruct students on the proper care, handling, and use of aviation technology equipment. The position requires adherence to district policies, development of lesson plans, and providing individualized instruction. The teacher will also identify, select, and modify instructional resources, incorporate technology, and organize class time effectively. Creating a welcoming and engaging learning environment, communicating student progress, and maintaining professional competence are key aspects of this role. The teacher will also participate in occupational-related instructional training, evaluate student growth, administer testing, and instruct students on safety measures. Classroom management, participation in staff meetings, facilitating CTE program advisory committee meetings, sponsoring CTSO chapters, and coordinating Work-Based Learning experiences are also responsibilities. Fostering workplace readiness skills by integrating Virginia’s 5Cs is essential. The teacher will perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Must possess an in-depth knowledge of aviation technology and possess a current pilot’s license.
Must possess working skills and abilities in the operation of a variety of aviation technology devices and equipment.
Must possess AirFrame & PowerPlant Certification (A&P) and meet Virginia Department of Education requirements to teach aviation courses.
Must possess effective instructional delivery techniques and excellent communication skills.
Must possess an in-depth knowledge of aviation technology and electricity, both AC and DC.
Must possess working skills and abilities in the operation of a variety of aviation technology devices and equipment.
Must possess the ability to instruct students in the field of aviation technology.
Manages classroom resources, including selecting, requisitioning, and maintaining books, instructional materials, aviation technology equipment, and instructional aids.
Conducts minor repairs and adjustments to aviation technology equipment and coordinates major repairs as needed.
Stays current with industry advancements, research, and new technologies in aviation instruction to enhance curriculum and teaching methods.
Experience in curriculum development; ability to create lesson plans to meet the needs of a diverse student population
Willingness to work collaboratively and serve as a resource for faculty
Commitment to student learning, personal growth, and professional development
Strong classroom management skills are required
Highly organized
Must hold or be eligible for a Virginia teaching license and possess a current pilot’s license.
Bachelors or Associate degree or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates the required knowledge and competencies in aviation technology and instruction.

Nice To Haves

Private Pilot License, Commercial Pilot License and Flight Instructor certification preferred.

Responsibilities

Support and demonstrate commitment to the mission, vision, core principles, and policies of the Danville Public Schools
Adhere to all district policies, procedures, and business ethics codes
Establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects and clearly and concisely communicate those objectives to students
Develop lesson plans and supplementary materials compatible with the division’s basic instructional philosophy and congruent with course standards; provide individualized and small group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student and subgroups of students.
Identify, select, and modify instructional resources to meet the needs of students with varying backgrounds, learning styles, and special needs; incorporate new and emerging technology into the instructional process
Organize class time so that preparation, instruction, lab work, and cleanup are all accomplished, as applicable
Create a welcoming, supportive, challenging, and engaging learning environment for students; encourage cooperation among students
Model professional and ethical standards when dealing with students, parents, peers, and the community
Communicate necessary information regularly to students, colleagues, and parents regarding student progress and needs; establish and maintain cooperative relationships with co-workers relative to school matters
Maintain professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the district and self-selected professional growth activities
Participate in additional days of occupational-related instructional training (including, but not limited to: SkillsUSA competitions, teacher certification attainment, industry certification training, etc.)
Evaluate students' academic and social growth, prepare report cards, and keep appropriate records, including attendance reports, checklists, census forms, and other recordkeeping activities as necessary
Administer testing in accordance with division and State testing practices and requirements
Instruct students on appropriate safety measures and expectations; demonstrate and teach students about the use of eye protection, safety guards, and the proper use and safe operation of tools, machines, and equipment, as applicable
Manage the classroom to ensure the best use of instructional time; develop and implement appropriate classroom management strategies while maintaining high expectations for student behavior
Attend and participate in staff meetings and serve on staff committees
Facilitate Career and Technical Education (CTE) program advisory committee meetings
Sponsor the local chapter of their respective Career & Technical Student Organization (CTSO); encourage and assist students in competition preparation
Coordinate and oversee Work-Based Learning (WBL) experiences
Foster workplace readiness skills by strategically integrating Virginia’s 5Cs ( critical thinking, creative thinking, communication, collaboration, and citizenship) skills into daily lesson plans
Participate in and provide business partners for the CTE Advisory Board
Perform other duties as assigned
