About The Position

Chinook High School is seeking a Teacher Counsellor to join their team and support their diverse community with a student first approach. The successful candidate will build trusting, authentic relationships with students by centering their lived experiences and identities, and offering support rooted in empathy, respect, and cultural responsiveness. They will collaborate with educators, families, and community members to foster safe, affirming, and identity-affirming school environments for all students, particularly those who are targeted for marginalization. The role requires a deep commitment to understanding Indigenous ways of knowing and approaches counselling through a non-clinical, relational lens, prioritizing student voice and agency over diagnostic or deficit-based models. The successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to personal professional growth and reflection with a learner mindset and be committed to fostering collaborative working relationships.

Requirements

  • Applicants must possess or be eligible to obtain an Alberta Teaching Certificate.
  • Master of Counselling, Bachelor or Master of Social Work, or related degree.
  • A police information check, including Vulnerable Sector Check from Police Services or an RCMP detachment that does not have any charges or convictions.
  • A satisfactory Intervention Record Check from South Region Alberta Child and Family Services.
  • Proof of photo identification, may be a valid driver’s licence, provincial identification card as issued by a licensed government registry office, valid passport or Nexus card. If one cannot be provided, a new card must be obtained and proof of application provided within three days of hire.
  • Documentation of a valid Social Insurance Number in the employee’s legal name. If valid Social Insurance documentation in the current legal name can not be provided, the successful candidate will be required to obtain a new one within three days of hire.
  • Sound understanding of teaching context and contributing variables.
  • Deep understanding of subject disciplines taught and pedagogical approaches based on best practice.
  • Understanding of planning, assessment and instructional practices.
  • Understanding of classroom management strategies that contribute to a positive learning environment.
  • The ability to use technology in meaningful ways for teaching and learning.
  • Qualities of a reflective practitioner who engages in professional learning aligned with the TQS.
  • Commitment to the school community with respect to professional relationships.
  • A belief in collaborative practice and teamwork.
  • Active contribution to school and student activity, and overall ability to develop effective relationships within the school and community.
