About The Position

Spokane Public Schools is seeking qualified candidates who are prepared and excited to provide a 21st century learning environment that effectively addresses the emerging necessity of social emotional supports and blending learning strategies. This is a 0.8 FTE position with 5.6 hours per day, a continuing contract type, and an anticipated start date for the 2026-27 school year.

Requirements

  • Washington State CTE Teaching Certificate with appropriate Construction Technologies V Code #V460200, or the ability to verify 6,000 hours of recent occupational experience in residential or commercial construction, carpentry, woodworking, cabinetmaking, architecture, or millwork.
  • Must be willing to be trained in PLTW (Project Lead the Way) Engineering for the following school year (2027-2028).
  • Qualifies for a valid Washington State teaching certificate with appropriate endorsements as required by law and regulations.
  • Holds continuing, or is eligible for initial or probationary certification with endorsement in the proposed Skills Center assignment.
  • Pass the State's "WEST-B" basic skills examination for teachers.
  • Certifications, or eligibility for, verified by Spokane Public Schools.
  • Demonstrates classroom management procedures that provide for large and small groups, and individuals, and provides an environment conducive to learning.
  • Uses appropriate disciplinary procedures, establishes clear parameters for student behavior, responds properly when problems occur, and helps students toward self-discipline.
  • Demonstrates ability to communicate clearly and effectively in both written and oral form.
  • Flexible in learning new concepts, cooperates with others, and adapts to a variety of assignments and conditions.
  • Enthusiastic and displays an overall optimism toward teaching and student learning.
  • Assesses needs of students, prescribes and implements effective lessons to meet students' needs through the use of appropriate and current instructional skills.

Responsibilities

  • Organize instructional programs within the prescribed curriculum to provide for individual differences.
  • Be able to effectively teach students of varying abilities.
  • Be able to maintain classroom discipline and use effective classroom management skills.
  • Utilize and maintain district/building curricular and student learning objectives.
  • Prepare and maintain long-range and weekly lesson plans.
  • Maintain appropriate student records.
  • Work as an effective member of the department to evaluate and improve the program.
  • Communicate and interpret school programs to patrons.
  • Communicate student progress to parents.
  • Be familiar with state essential leanings, district targets, qualifying standards, testing, etc.
  • Work as an effective member of the grade level, staff, and community to evaluate and improve student learning.
  • Work with the local trades and apprenticeships including the related advisory committee, Skills Center administration, Skills Center staff, professional associations, and post-secondary institutions to develop and maintain integrated, relevant academic, employability, and technical student learning competencies for the Construction Trades.
  • Stay current with technological advances in the construction trades industry, and maintain proficiency in all areas included in the program curriculum.
  • Work as an effective member of the Skills Center team to evaluate, market, and improve the assigned program.
  • Develop and maintain an effective program advisory committee.
  • Fulfill other responsibilities as assigned by the building administration.
