About The Position

This position supports a five-year-old kindergarten class at Townville Elementary School. The Teacher Assistant works with individual students or small groups to reinforce learning, assists the teacher in developing strategies for student needs, and prepares instructional materials. The role also involves supporting students' social and behavioral development, assisting with behavioral support plans, and operating classroom equipment. Additionally, the assistant guides independent study, supervises students during various activities, and helps with daily living routines and physical health programs. Confidentiality of student data and adherence to IEPs are crucial. The role requires adaptability to a changing educational environment.

Requirements

Two or four-year degree, or two years of college (60 semester hours), or passing score on Praxis Parapro Assessment, required
Reading, writing, hearing, and speaking effectively
Walking or use of a wheelchair or other mobile device
Standing, bending and lifting/moving items up to 50 pounds, if applicable

Responsibilities

Works with individual students or small groups of students to reinforce learning of material or skills initially introduced by the teacher
Assists the teacher in devising special strategies for reinforcing material or skills based on a sympathetic understanding of individual students, their needs, interests, and abilities
Assists instructional staff in the preparation and adaptation of instructional materials for the purpose of providing activities and materials that facilitate student learning and performance
Assists students by using behavioral strategies, positive reinforcements, social stories, peer facilitation and peer training for the purpose of teaching appropriate social behaviors in accordance with students’ social and behavioral learning goals
Assists with behavioral support plans, which may include physical restraint of a student, after receiving training from a certified crisis intervention instructor
Operates and cares for equipment used in the classroom for instructional purposes
Guides independent study, enrichment work, and remedial work set up and assigned by the teacher
Assists with the supervision of students during emergency drills, assemblies, play periods, and field trips
Checks agendas and assists with writing homework assignments
Accompanies student to and from classes, if needed
Assists student in small groups or individually as directed by teacher
Transports student to and from cars or buses
Assist with student testing
Assists teacher in the instruction of daily living routines such as personal hygiene, toileting, dressing, self-feeding, drinking, etc.
Assists with physical health programs for students which include such activities as physical therapy, assisting students with exercise, stretching, walking, etc., if applicable
If applicable, assists students with physical tasks such as putting on and taking off outer wear, moving from room to room, eating, getting on and off school buses, lifts and places students in and out of special needs equipment, and/or assists student with eating
If applicable, assists students with all toiletry needs and diaper changes
Assists with and reinforces speech therapy lessons, if applicable
If needed, adjusts special equipment for students use
Serves as the chief source of information and help to any substitute teacher assigned in the absence of the regular teacher
Participates in in-service training programs as assigned
Ensures the safety of students in the classroom
Is aware of, and adheres to, students’ IEPs and individual accommodations
Maintains confidentiality of student personally identifiable data
Completes required daily documentation
Performs other duties as assigned
