The Teacher Assistant performs a variety of tasks supporting professional staff and the educational environment in schools. Depending on the vacancy, duties may cover instruction, clerical work, behavior support, bus driving, computer lab support, testing coordination, student success coordination, or bilingual ESL support. The position requires a range of competencies, including reliable attendance, positive relationships with students and employees, sound communication and record-keeping, confidentiality, appropriate behavior management, and the ability to follow school policies and procedures. Employees are expected to support school programs, participate in professional learning aligned with their duties, and complete other assigned tasks. Specific duties vary by assignment. Instructional assistants support lesson preparation and delivery, monitor student work and engagement, and may substitute for a teacher as needed. Behavior-related assistants use appropriate interventions and support student assignments; a Behavior Intervention Specialist may also analyze discipline data, help develop behavior and safety plans, attend student-support meetings, conduct observations and therapeutic meetings, and assist with communications and transitions. Bus-driver duties include following the applicable agreement and handbook, completing reports, and accepting special driving assignments. Computer lab duties may include teaching basic computer skills, guiding students through curriculum software, training teachers, reviewing software, and troubleshooting systems and networks. Testing Coordinators maintain records and perform clerical and administrative tasks, prepare and coordinate testing events, safeguard testing materials and records, assist with student registration and records requests, and provide front-office support as assigned. A Student Success Coordinator manages and analyzes student attendance, academic progress, discipline, interventions, virtual courses, and recovery programs, and may work flexible hours including Saturdays. Bilingual ESL instructional assistants support limited- or non-English-speaking students through instruction, classroom support, translation, interpretation, record keeping, and communication with students, families, teachers, and administrators. The position requires the physical abilities described in the posting, including lifting and other physical activities. A high school diploma and one of the listed postsecondary-credit or testing alternatives are required. A Commercial Driver’s License is required only when applicable to advertised bus-driving duties, or the employee must be willing to obtain one. If offered a position, the prospective employee must pass a health exam, criminal records check, and drug test; the position is subject to random drug testing as safety-sensitive work.
