About The Position

The Strait Regional Centre for Education (SRCE) is seeking qualified candidates for a Teacher Assistant position. The SRCE is part of the public education system in Nova Scotia, established to support student learning, achievement, well-being, and overall success. With approximately 1,166 employees, the SRCE operates 20 schools and 375 pre-primary programs across four counties in northeastern Nova Scotia. This position falls under the CUPE Local 955 job classification.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Teacher assistant training through a recognized diploma or certificate program, or an equivalent training program (i.e., CCA, LPN), including a personal care course.
  • A school practicum organized by the institution of the diploma program, or equivalent personal care experience.
  • Ability to perform all job duties, including personal and physical care of students.
  • Current certification in CPR and First Aid or willingness to obtain prior to employment.
  • Experience and demonstrated ability in managing children or youth with exceptional needs.
  • Must provide at least three (3) work-related references, one of which must be the most recent supervisor.
  • Must provide a current (within the last 6 months), and clear Criminal Record Check-Vulnerable Sector and Child Abuse Registry prior to employment.

Nice To Haves

  • Current Non-violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) certification.
  • Education and training in the use of assistive technology, including computers.

Responsibilities

  • Assist students with feeding, toileting needs, and personal hygiene.
  • Administer medication and carry out medical procedures under the direction of the school principal.
  • Assist students with mobility, including lifting, positioning, and embarking/disembarking from transportation.
  • Supervise students to ensure a safe environment.
  • Assist students in the operation of support equipment.
  • Assist students in dressing and undressing.
  • Promote student's emotional growth, well-being, and independence.
  • Encourage the development of student dignity and self-esteem.
  • Facilitate positive interactions among all students.
  • Motivate students and encourage participation.
  • Assist in the implementation of behavior management plans.
  • Assist students in following programs, strategies, exercises, and materials developed by the teacher.
  • Assist the teacher(s) in the preparation of material.
  • Provide feedback to the supervisory teacher on observations of students.
  • Accompany students to and from community work placements and provide support.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
