About The Position

This is a long-term substitute Teacher Assistant position for students with disabilities. The role involves assisting students in reaching their goals as indicated on their IEPs, working under the direction and supervision of certified personnel.

Requirements

  • Ability to assist in lifting students for the purpose of positioning, changing, toileting, etc. when needed.
  • Ability and willingness to work with students who have special needs and/or self-regulation needs (i.e. biting, kicking, hitting, emotional outburst, etc.).

Responsibilities

  • Assist in implementing IEP goals.
  • Carry out small group instruction and assist in one-on-one instruction as needed.
  • Assist teachers and therapists in maintaining appropriate data and records.
  • Support the continuous implementation of skills and goals associated with students’ OT, SLP and PT needs.
  • Carry out and maintain computer skills and communication devices for students.
  • Implement equipment, sensory, mobility, behavior plans and self-care plans (toileting) per students’ needs.
  • Assist students with self-help skills (grooming, toileting etc.).
  • Assist students with mobility needs (may involve lifting, toileting, etc.).
  • Assist with lifting and positioning students.
  • Assist students in their environmental setting including the restroom.
  • Accompany students to physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech etc.
  • Observe and chart behavior.
  • Give positive reinforcement and support.
  • Provide close supervision for students with self-regulation needs.
  • Assist in implementing the positive behavior support plan as set up by the supervising teacher according to the IEP.
  • Assist with data keeping and recording.
  • Recognize the stages of an escalating crisis and intervene with evidence-based techniques to appropriately de-escalate.
  • Supervise safe spots.
