About The Position

Under the supervision of the Senior Program Manager of Education and Inclusion and the Site Manager, the Teacher Assistant Floater is responsible for providing support across various classrooms and program sites within the Tri-County service area. This position serves as a support role, with assignments subject to change based on each center site and classroom's specific needs. The Teacher Assistant Floater plays a critical role in assisting classrooms in meeting Head Start Performance Standards and adhering to licensing regulations, while also ensuring appropriate teacher-child ratios are maintained. The Teacher Assistant Floater provides support to teaching staff to facilitate daily educational activities, manage classroom operations, and supervise children. Daily assignments may fluctuate based on program requirements, staffing coverage, or specific classroom support needs. The Teacher Assistant Floater is required to travel between facilities and programs to assist as necessary.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.
  • Knowledge of early childhood growth and development, and age-appropriate activities.
  • Knowledge of the practices, procedures and regulations in child care, to include the Active Supervision of children.
  • Ability to gain knowledge of Head Start Performance Standards and Head Start Policies and Procedures.
  • Ability to receive and follow detailed instructions.
  • Ability to operate a personal computer.
  • Knowledge of a variety of computer software applications in MS Office software.
  • Ability to gain knowledge of the Child Plus and Learning Genie software.
  • Ability to navigate the Internet.
  • Ability to maintaining composure, keeping emotions in check, controlling anger, and avoiding aggressive behavior, even in very difficult situations.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with staff, parents, volunteers, and community representatives.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both written and orally.
  • Ability to work and communicate with people from various multi-cultural backgrounds and socio-economic levels.
  • Sensitivity to the needs, abilities, beliefs, and attitudes of individuals within and outside the Agency, including but not limited to clients and co-workers.
  • One (1) year of experience working directly with infants to preschool-age children.
  • Must be able to obtain at least fifteen (15) clock hours of certified training per year.
  • Must enroll in the State mandated 45-hour module for child care within the first 90 days of employment.
  • Must complete within timeframe given upon hire.
  • Must meet criteria for background screening as required for child care personnel in child care licensing regulations.
  • CDA must be renewed prior to the deadline listed on the CDA certification.
  • Performing physical activities that require considerable use of your arms and legs and moving your whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling of materials and children.
  • May be required to perform moderate lifting, approximately 30-50 pounds, for example in lifting children.
  • Position requires bending, stooping, and kneeling.
  • Ability to appropriately prevent a child from hurting him/herself or others.
  • Required to stand and/or be in continuous motion for extended periods of time while performing job functions.
  • Ability to speak in front of large groups.
  • Ability to set up meetings including moving tables, chairs, etc., and cleanup.
  • Possible exposure to communicable diseases, including blood borne pathogens.
  • The ability to safely and successfully perform essential job functions consistent with the ADA, FMLA, and other federal, state and local standards, including meeting qualitative and/or qualitative productivity standards.
  • The ability to maintain reasonably, regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA, and other federal, state and local standards.
  • Compliance with all personnel policies of the Agency.

  • Associate degree in Early Childhood Education or related field preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provides classroom support to teachers and children as assigned across multiple classrooms and program sites.
  • Serves as the core support in classrooms to ensure proper teacher-child ratios and active supervision.
  • Works in assigned classrooms as designated and based upon agency needs.
  • Will require travel when necessary.
  • Assists implementing daily lesson plans and classroom activities aligned with the approved early childhood curriculum and Head Start Performance Standards.
  • Supports teachers in preparing instructional materials and classroom learning centers.
  • Provides active supervision of children at all times.
  • Assists with transitions, meals, outdoor play, rest time, and daily routines.
  • Model’s appropriate interactions and positive behavior supports for children.
  • Assists with classroom organization, sanitation, and maintaining a safe learning environment.
  • Helps classroom volunteer with classroom routine.
  • Helps teachers maintain classroom records, progress reports, incident and accident reports, and other necessary documentation.
  • Assist the teacher in conducting home visits and may participate in parent meetings when applicable.
  • Identifies and reports child abuse cases.
  • Supports inclusion practices for children with disabilities according to IFSP or IEP goals.
  • Encourages family engagement and positive communication with parents when appropriate.
  • Participates in required training and professional development.
  • Seeks in-kind (donated time, services, products, cash) for the program and documents accurately when applicable.
  • Travels to various classrooms or program sites within the Tri-County area as directed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Participates in the Agency’s Quality Improvement Program.
