About The Position

This position involves dual responsibilities as a Teacher Assistant and a Bus Driver at Blackburn Elementary for the 26-27 school year. As a Teacher Assistant, under limited supervision, the role supports the teacher in student instruction and performs tasks to aid the teaching-learning process. As a Bus Driver, under general supervision, the role ensures the safe transportation of students to and from destinations, adhering to school district procedures and monitoring student behavior on the bus.

Requirements

High School Diploma
Teacher Assistant: Minimum of 48 hours of college level coursework.
Teacher Assistant: A minimum GPA of 2.0 is required or WorkKeys Certification including Business Writing.
Teacher Assistant: Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with parents, schools, community and district office personnel.
Teacher Assistant: Willingness to undergo further training as required.
Teacher Assistant: Experience using the computer.
Bus Driver: Five (5) years of responsible driving experience.
Bus Driver: Completion of the North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles Bus Driver Training Course.
Bus Driver: Must be able to pass the required DOT Physical examination and have a DOT Drug Screen with negative results.
Bus Driver: Must be eligible to hold a Commercial Drivers License with Passenger Endorsement.
Teacher Assistant: Working knowledge of effective methods of dealing with children.
Teacher Assistant: Working knowledge of the core subjects and the Spanish language at the grade levels to which employment assignment is made.
Teacher Assistant: Some knowledge of the school organization and its community.
Teacher Assistant: Some knowledge of expected behavior of children, that is, basic characteristics of ages and stages.
Teacher Assistant: Skill necessary to operate audiovisual equipment and common office machines.
Teacher Assistant: Skill to make learning aids which will strengthen lesson plans.
Teacher Assistant: Ability to comprehend the purpose of teacher designed strategies as a fulfillment of the instructional objective.
Teacher Assistant: Ability to discern significant student behavior and refer this to the supervisor.
Teacher Assistant: Ability to impart information to the child's level of comprehension.
Teacher Assistant: Ability to apply impartially and consistently proper methods of recognition, reward and punishment.
Teacher Assistant: Ability to solve independently most minor problems.
Teacher Assistant: Ability to follow minimally detailed written and oral instructions without constant supervision.
Teacher Assistant: Ability to record and store data accurately.
Teacher Assistant: Ability to maintain confidentiality of student information.
Bus Driver: Knowledge of driving laws and regulations.
Bus Driver: Knowledge of safe bus operations.
Bus Driver: Knowledge of vehicle pre-run checks and their performance.
Bus Driver: Maintain records of names and addresses of students, locations and times of stops, route information, and time sheets.
Bus Driver: Administrative skills to implement established policies and procedures regarding student transportation, enforcing rules of student conduct and discipline.
Bus Driver: Communication skills in dealing with students daily; communicating with parents regarding bus routes and discipline problems; and advising the transportation department of bus malfunctions.
Bus Driver: Leadership skills to maintain discipline on the bus.
Bus Driver: Manual skills to maintain bus cleanliness.
Bus Driver: Mechanical skills to detect bus malfunction.
Bus Driver: Planning skills to develop student seating arrangements.
Bus Driver: Common arithmetical function to count the number of students on the bus and to complete time.

Nice To Haves

Two years of experience working with children preferred, or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the job functions.
Proficiency in specific foreign language preferred.

Performs other related duties as assigned by the DL/I teacher and/or principal.
Drives bus safely to destination and return.
Conforms to traffic rules and regulations; makes vehicle pre-checks and records and reports malfunctions; follows school district regulations for handling vehicle breakdowns and accident incidents; and keeps the bus clean.
Follows school district procedures when driving assigned bus routes.
Picks up and drops off students at designated times and bus stops; ensures students depart the bus at their usual stops; and determines that all students leave the bus at both ends of the route.
Monitor students' behavior while they are riding on the bus.
Take suitable action to resolve incidents between/among students should such incidents occur and report inappropriate student behavior to school authorities as soon as possible.
Responsible for the safe transportation of students.
