About The Position

The Teacher Assistant, Bilingual (Portuguese) position at Deerfield Beach Middle School aims to provide bilingual instructional assistance in the classroom. This role involves supporting students in their home language, preparing instructional materials, assisting with classroom instruction, performing clerical duties, and supervising students to enhance educational delivery. The assignments must align with state statutes, regulations, and the educational practices of The School Board of Broward County, Florida. The assistant may also help with the implementation of specific grants. Key responsibilities include providing academic support to individual or small groups of students in their home language under teacher supervision, conferring with teachers about student needs, assisting with student progress evaluation and feedback to parents in an understandable mode, managing ELL folders and record-keeping, aiding in ESOL eligibility testing and progress assessments, providing translation for non-English speaking parents (phone calls, notes, letters), and serving as an interpreter/translator for the school's ELL committee and ESOL Parent Advisory Councils. The role also includes performing other non-instructional duties as assigned, promoting equal employment and non-discrimination policies, participating in training, reviewing current developments, ensuring adherence to safety rules, and following all relevant policies.

Requirements

  • Standard high school diploma or satisfactory completion of an approved General Educational Development (GED) Testing Program.
  • Successful completion of the Teacher Assisting Curriculum at the designated technical college in the Broward County School District and achieve a passing score on the ParaPro Test, or other officially sanctioned standard tests, to demonstrate the ability to assist in instructing reading/language arts, writing, and mathematics; or reading readiness, writing readiness, and mathematics readiness, as appropriate.
  • Ability to speak, read and write English and the language representative of the targeted English Language Learners (ELLs) population(s).
  • Sensitive to other cultures.
  • Ability to work with students.
  • Computer skills.

Nice To Haves

  • An earned associate’s degree from an accredited institution or at least 60 semester hours of earned college credit from an accredited institution.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of demonstrated experience, within the last five (5) years, in working with children preferred.
  • Six (6) semester hours in the area of human growth and development.

Responsibilities

  • Provide academic assistance and support for individual and/or small groups of students in the home-language, as directed by and, under the supervision of the teacher.
  • Confer, as needed, with teachers concerning programs and materials to meet student needs.
  • Assist the teacher with evaluating student progress on a regular basis and providing feedback to students and parents in a mode of communication understandable to the parents.
  • Assist with ELL folders/record keeping of placement of files, achievement data, etc.
  • Assist with the administration of English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) eligibility testing and/or appropriate assessments designed to measure and observe student progress.
  • Provide translation for non-English speaking parents such as phone calls, notes, and letters between home and school.
  • Assist and serve as a member of the school’s ELL committee.
  • Assist with meetings and ESOL Parent Advisory Councils as interpreter/translator.
  • Under the supervision of a certified personnel/administrator and on a limited basis perform other non-instructional duties as assigned.
  • Perform and promote all activities in compliance with the equal employment and non-discrimination policies of The School Board of Broward County, Florida.
  • Participate in training programs offered to enhance the individual skills and proficiency related to job responsibilities.
  • Review current developments, literature and technical sources of information related to job responsibilities.
  • Ensure adherence to safety rules and procedures.
  • Follow federal and state, as well as School Board policies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor or designee.
