About The Position

The Teacher Assistant-Bilingual (Creole) position at Cypress Elementary in Pompano Beach is responsible for providing bilingual instructional assistance in the classroom. This includes preparing instructional materials, presenting classroom instruction, performing clerical duties, and supervising students to enhance the delivery of education. Assignments will align with state statutes, regulations, and the educational practices of The School Board of Broward County, Florida. The role may also involve assisting with the implementation of specific grants.

Requirements

  • Standard high school diploma or satisfactory completion of an approved General Educational Development (GED) Testing Program.
  • Successful completion of the Principles of Teaching (formerly known as Teacher Assisting Curriculum) at the designated technical college in the Broward County School District and achieve a passing score on the ParaPro Test, or other officially sanctioned standard tests, to demonstrate the ability to assist in instructing reading/language arts, writing, and mathematics; or reading readiness, writing readiness, and mathematics readiness, as appropriate.
  • Ability to speak, read and write English and the language representative of the targeted English Language Learners (ELLs) population(s).
  • Sensitive to other cultures.
  • Ability to work with students.
  • Computer skills.

Nice To Haves

  • An earned associate’s degree from an accredited institution or at least 60 semester hours of earned college credit from an accredited institution.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of demonstrated experience, within the last five (5) years, in working with children.
  • Six (6) semester hours in the area of human growth and development.

Responsibilities

  • Provide academic assistance and support for individual and/or small groups of students in their home language, under the supervision of the teacher.
  • Confer with teachers regarding programs and materials to meet student needs.
  • Assist the teacher in evaluating student progress and providing feedback to students and parents in an understandable mode of communication.
  • Assist with ELL folders and record-keeping, including placement of files and achievement data.
  • Assist with the administration of English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) eligibility testing and other assessments to measure student progress.
  • Provide translation for non-English speaking parents, including phone calls, notes, and letters between home and school.
  • Serve as a member of the school’s ELL committee.
  • Assist with meetings and ESOL Parent Advisory Councils as an interpreter/translator.
  • Perform other non-instructional duties as assigned under the supervision of certified personnel/administrator.
  • Perform and promote all activities in compliance with equal employment and non-discrimination policies.
  • Participate in training programs to enhance job skills and proficiency.
  • Review current developments, literature, and technical sources related to job responsibilities.
  • Ensure adherence to safety rules and procedures.
  • Follow federal, state, and School Board policies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor or designee.
