About The Position
Under general supervision, teachers approved SFPS curriculum to students of all abilities, promoting artistic growth and providing appropriate art activities. This position requires a Bachelor's degree and a New Mexico teaching license with a visual arts endorsement. The role involves managing a classroom, differentiating instruction, collaborating with other teachers, and utilizing computer skills. The teacher will be responsible for creating a positive learning environment, assessing students, coordinating with external arts organizations, ordering and maintaining materials, displaying student art, attending faculty meetings, and ensuring student supervision. The position is for the 2026-2027 school year with a 0.20 FTE (Full-Time Equivalent) and a 9-month contract.
Requirements
- Minimum Bachelor’s degree.
- NM teaching license with visual arts endorsement.
- Knowledge of visual arts pedagogy.
- Familiarity with a broad range of materials and techniques in the visual arts as defined in the Scope and Sequence guides.
- Ability to manage a classroom and differentiate instruction.
- Ability to collaborate with classroom teachers to integrate the arts into other core curriculum areas.
- Computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office and Microsoft Outlook.
- Demonstrates reliability as evidenced by attendance records and punctuality.
- Properly notifies supervisor and/or designee of absences or tardiness.
- Begins and completes work within the allotted time.
- Consistently appears in attire appropriate to the work environment.
- Demonstrates skill in using equipment, including its capabilities, limitations, and appropriate/special applications.
- Protects the District’s resources through appropriate and careful use of supplies and equipment.
- Utilizes appropriate body mechanics to aid in the prevention of muscle strain/injury.
Nice To Haves
- At least one year’s previous teaching experience.
- Knowledge of database programs preferred.
Responsibilities
- Promotes an environment/climate conducive to creative visual arts education.
- Communicates effectively with the school principal, colleagues, and arts education coordinator.
- Provides lesson plans aligned to the SFPS art curricula and incorporates Common Core subject areas.
- Assesses students according to district practice.
- Coordinates with visiting artists and community arts organizations to enrich the arts program.
- Orders and maintains materials & tools.
- Displays student art at school site(s) throughout the school year and contributes to district, state, and community art shows.
- Attends monthly district art faculty meetings.
- Instructs and plans for the visual arts program at the site(s) assigned during the nine-month contract.
- Ensures the adequate supervision of students.
- Establishes and maintains rapport with students in a manner that encourages self-expression, higher-order thinking skills, and joyous risk-taking.
- Motivates students to achieve maximum potential.
- Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
- Works collaboratively with staff, families, and community resources to support the success of a diverse student population.
- Complies with and supports school and district regulations and policies.
- Models non-discriminatory practices in all activities.
- Other duties as assigned.
