About The Position

The Teacher 1 (Literacy) works under general direction and requires considerable knowledge of teacher education. The role provides basic education instruction, including reading, writing, and mathematics, to inmates at Trumbull Correctional. The teacher assesses educational needs, develops lesson plans and assignments, provides instruction and individual assistance, and administers and interprets examinations and proficiency indicators. The position also involves maintaining discipline and/or security, counseling students, preparing records and reports, managing instructional supplies and materials, researching teaching materials, and attending meetings and professional development sessions.

Requirements

• Current teacher certificate appropriate for the grade level and area of specialization to be assigned.
• Must also have a baccalaureate degree or less.

Responsibilities

• Provide instruction in basic education needs, including reading, writing, and mathematics.
• Assess the educational needs of inmates.
• Develop lesson plans and individual assignments and training to address educational needs.
• Provide instruction and individual assistance.
• Administer, score, and interpret examinations and proficiency indicators.
• Maintain discipline and/or security.
• Counsel students concerning their performance, behavior, and/or personal problems.
• Attend meetings as required.
• Prepare required records and reports, including enrollment, grades, and student progress.
• Inventory and order supplies and materials needed.
• Research, select, and recommend new teaching materials.
• Attend in-service training sessions and workshops for professional development.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
