About The Position

We are looking for a Tax Staff Accountant who combines strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to stay organized and responsive in a fast-paced professional environment. In this role, you will prepare federal, state, and local tax returns for individuals, businesses, trusts, estates, and nonprofit organizations; develop supporting calculations and workpapers; and assist with tax planning and research. You will work across a range of tax, accounting, research, and document management software while learning from experienced professionals and serving clients across a variety of industries. The ideal candidate is comfortable learning new technology, managing multiple priorities during busy seasons, and maintaining close attention to detail while progressing toward CPA licensure. This full-time position is based in our Hagerstown office and offers meaningful opportunities to build technical expertise, trusted client relationships, and a long-term career with SEK.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or related field required.
  • 0-2 years’ experience (can include a tax internship in tax or public accounting).
  • Progress toward CPA License strongly encouraged.
  • Foundational knowledge of accounting principles.
  • Strong analytical, research, problem-solving, and attention-to-detail skills.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to interact professionally with clients and team members.
  • Ability to organize and manage multiple assignments, priorities, deadlines, and budgets in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (especially Excel) and the ability to learn and effectively use tax preparation, research, workflow, and document management systems.
  • Ability to work independently while also collaborating effectively with engagement teams and contributing to firm goals.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare federal, state, and local tax returns for individuals, corporations, partnerships, trusts, estates, and nonprofit organizations.
  • Develop supporting calculations, schedules, and workpapers to ensure accurate, timely, and compliant tax filings.
  • Assist with quarterly and year-end tax planning for individual and business clients.
  • Gather, organize, and review client financial information and supporting documentation.
  • Communicate with clients and team members to obtain information, answer questions, and keep engagements moving forward.
  • Research tax laws, deductions, credits, and regulatory changes to support client engagements.
  • Manage assigned engagements from start to finish while meeting established deadlines, budgets, and quality standards.
  • Collaborate with team members to identify and resolve issues and achieve engagement objectives.
  • Participate in training, continuing professional education, and on-the-job learning to strengthen technical expertise.
  • Contribute to process improvements, professional networking opportunities, and firmwide initiatives while progressing toward CPA licensure.
