About The Position

We are seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Tax Specialist to be an integral part of our Tax Department. The ideal candidate will be knowledgeable in U.S. state and local indirect tax laws, focusing on ensuring accurate sales/use tax, CAT and gross receipts tax compliance, exemption certificate management, and addressing questions on proper handling of sales and use tax for various business situations that arise. This role will also coordinate data collection and provision of this data to outside compliance providers for personal property tax; incomes taxes and annual reports return compilation.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 3–5+ years of direct, hands-on experience in multi-state sales tax compliance in a corporate environment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel.
  • Understanding of current sales tax rules.
  • Analytical Thinking: Ability to interpret taxing authority regulations.
  • Attention to Detail: High accuracy in data management and documentation.
  • Communication: Effective communication to explain tax issues to non-tax stakeholders.
  • Time Management: Proven ability to address tax inquiries in a timely manner.
  • Inquisitiveness: Willingness to learn about key components of other taxes, including Federal and State Incomes taxes and Personal property taxes, as they relate to the current and future operations of the company.

Responsibilities

  • Retrieve and review monthly multi-state sales tax data, reconcile and provide to outside compliance provider before agreed upon due dates; Initiate approved tax payments for other taxes either electronically or through collaboration with AP team; Handle tax notices; Complete and pay business licenses, CAT filings and gross receipt tax returns.
  • Review incoming exemption certificates and verify completeness and validity in accordance with appropriate state sales tax laws; Review and approve any related tax credit requests, as applicable; Manage the customer exemption certificate retention process in the appropriate certificate management system; Preparation of outgoing exemption certificates requested by vendors.
  • Reconcile tax accounts and provide schedules to the General Ledger team for use in making the appropriate entries. Coordinate with General Ledger team on identifying source of variances.
  • Advise internal teams on taxability topics and resolve customer tax inquiries. Work with various internal teams for them to provide necessary data for personal property tax, income tax and annual report compilation by outside providers and ensure timely delivered to the relevant contacts.
  • Initiate new sales tax account registrations as directed and close sales tax accounts that are no longer needed.
  • Contribute to tax function projects aimed at increasing efficiencies and reducing costs; Assist in identifying areas of opportunities.
  • Gather data and prepare schedules and reconciliations to support returns filed.
