About The Position

The Senior Tax Manager is responsible for providing tax and consulting services to business clients with pass through entities and to their business owners. This role involves performing tax planning, preparation, and research for various pass-through entities and their owners' individual returns, including estates, trusts, and charitable entities. The position requires managing client engagements, supervising and reviewing the work of team staff, and collaborating closely with clients, internal managers, and partners. A key aspect of the role is contributing to client satisfaction through timely services and high-quality work product, demonstrating a strong understanding of tax concepts, and actively pursuing continuous learning in tax developments. The Senior Tax Manager will ensure clients comply with all applicable authorities while minimizing tax and reporting burdens, and that self and client service teams adhere to all Firm policies, standards, and the BDO Tax Quality Manual (TQM). Significant knowledge of personal income tax, estate and gift tax, wealth retention strategies, and the taxation of entities owned by business owners (partnership and corporate taxation) is essential. The role includes conducting top-level reviews of tax returns, resolving tax issues with clients, and involving specialists when necessary. Planning and reviewing the tax process, including budgeting, staffing, monitoring engagement progress against budget, timely billing, managing out-of-scope activities, and timely collection of accounts receivable are also key responsibilities. The Senior Tax Manager will manage client relationships and expectations, provide timely advice, identify and perform necessary research, and apply Firm and professional standards for tax return preparation. Strategy development includes introducing new ideas to improve client or Firm positions, reviewing tax implication studies, offering alternative courses of action, and leveraging lessons learned from prior projects.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree, required; major in Accounting, Finance, Economics or Statistics, preferred
• Eight (8) or more years of prior relevant tax experience and/or public accounting, private industry accounting or consulting/professional services experience, required.
• Specifically, experience with working on individual, estate, trust, partnership, S-corporation, and private foundation tax/consulting clients.
• Prior supervisory experience, required
• CPA certification, Attorney (admitted to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction), or Internal Revenue Service Enrolled Agent (“EA”) (or the equivalent of one of these designations), required
• Detailed oriented
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to work independently and in a team environment
• Ability to effectively delegate work as needed
• Strong analytical, research and critical thinking skills as well as decision-making skills
• Capable of developing and managing a team of tax professionals
• Capable of effectively developing and maintaining client relationships
• Executive presence and ability to act as primary client contact for preparation and presentation of issues and resolutions to clients

Responsibilities

• Performs tax planning, preparation and research for pass through entities (S-corps, LLCs, Partnerships) and the business owners’ individual returns, which may include estates, trusts and charitable entities
• Manages client engagements, supervises and reviews work of team staff members, work closely with clients as well as internal managers and partners
• Contributes to client satisfaction by providing timely services and work product
• Demonstrates an understanding of tax concepts and actively pursuing increased tax knowledge through client assignments and current tax developments
• Ensures clients comply with all applicable authorities, while at the same time minimizing their tax and reporting burdens, and self and client service teams comply with all Firm policies, standards, and the BDO Tax Quality Manual (“TQM”)
• Conducts top level review of T/R and resolves all tax issues with client; involves specialists where appropriate
• Plans and reviews the tax process and the procedures to be performed to include: Budgeting and staffing, Monitoring engagement process and actual time incurred vs. budget with assistance of Senior, Timely billing including management of identified out-of-scope activity and communication to client, Timely collection of A/R
• Manages client relationships/expectations in accordance with the project
• Provides advice to clients in a timely manner
• Identifies when research is needed and performs such research; clearly and concisely frames issues to be researched; and clearly and concisely reports the analysis
• Applies most Firm and professional standards for preparation of WTA and tax returns
• Involves firm specialists, as appropriate
• Introduces and develops new or improved ideas to improve the position of clients, the Firm, or Firm personnel, e.g., by reducing taxes or expenses or providing non-tax benefits
• Reviews studies of tax implications and offers clients alternative courses of action
• Identifies and leverages lessons learned on prior projects, and offers input on how to improve processes and methods
• Responsible for building a team of professionals by training and working together to serve our high net worth clients with timely responses to their needs
• Supervises associates and senior associates on all projects
• Reviews work prepared by associates and senior associates and provide review comments
• Trains Associates and Seniors how to use all current software tools
• Acts as a Career Advisor to associates and senior associates
• Schedules and manages workload of associates and senior associates
• Provides verbal and written performance feedback to associates and senior associate
