About The Position

The Colorado Department of Revenue (CDOR) is seeking a customer service-oriented individual with accounting knowledge to join the Taxation Division as a Tax Examiner I in the Taxpayer Service Call Center. The Call Center serves over 200,000 customers annually, addressing a diverse range of tax-related inquiries including sales tax, marijuana excise tax, wage withholding, and income tax. As a Tax Examiner I, you will become a highly skilled professional after receiving up to four months of onsite, comprehensive orientation and training. Your responsibilities will include instructing taxpayers on completing applicable forms and documents, determining appropriate tax collection procedures, and authorizing or denying refunds or assessments. You will also provide the public with information regarding tax statutes, department policies, procedures, and positions on taxes administered by the department via telephone, web messages, and letters. The ideal candidate is an excellent communicator, a team player, has prior tax accounting experience, and is tech-savvy.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED)
  • Two (2) years of experience in customer service experience (six months of this experience must include work in accounting, bookkeeping, auditing or tax-administration).
  • Must be a resident of the State of Colorado at the time of submitting your application.

  • Experience in bookkeeping, technical accounting, tax administration, business economics, finance.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office and Google Workspace
  • Previous call center experience

Responsibilities

  • Educate inbound callers over the phone on specific and ambiguous tax issues administered by the Department of Revenue when the callers are uncertain about Colorado statutes, policies, and procedures.
  • Analyze and understand complex issues affecting their tax accounts in a fast-paced environment while also communicating the situation clearly and effectively in a way that the caller can understand.
  • Assist callers with exceptional customer service in utilizing the Department of Revenue or related entity’s websites, tax software, or service portals to file returns, submit payments, access tax information, and many other activities.
  • Learn and adapt to changes in statutes, policies and procedures on a frequent basis while being able to also facilitate the resolution of taxpayer account issues in accordance with the state statutes and policies.
