About The Position

The Tax Director is responsible for providing guidance to tax staff on the completion of individual, corporate, partnership, and trust tax returns. They will also review the work of the tax preparer and correspond directly with the Partner or Client. The Tax Director serves as the day-to-day contact for clients, managing engagements efficiently through timely assignment, supervision, and review of work, and conducting timely billing. They are responsible for larger, more complicated tax returns, delegating to and training various tax preparers. The role involves performing technical tax review and approval of most tax returns, developing professional relationships with clients, and serving as the main point-of-contact. The Tax Director informs clients of engagement progress and expectations, generates new business opportunities, and responds to federal and state tax notices. They supervise staff, provide feedback, evaluate progress, and offer guidance and direction, while also identifying staff qualifications and reviewing assignments. The role includes assisting in recruiting, performance evaluations, developing training aids, and acting as an instructor in professional development programs. The Tax Director performs technical tax review and approval of all assigned projects, identifying issues during engagements. They build long-term client relationships, understanding unique needs to provide tailored service, and communicate complex tax issues to non-tax professionals and clients. Maintaining knowledge of economic and political trends that could affect the business climate, managing tax research, ensuring accuracy, and documenting researched matters are key responsibilities. The role requires staying up-to-date with new technologies and leveraging firm technology for productivity and efficiency. Consistently demonstrating ownership and accountability for assigned clients and projects, and translating complex data into client-ready insights are also essential. Participation in firm practice development efforts and performing other duties as assigned are expected.

Requirements

  • At least 10+ years experience preparing/reviewing complex individual, corporate, partnership and S-corp tax returns
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and CPA or EA required
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office in particular Excel and Word, UltraTax, tax-planning software and cloud-based tax research software.
  • Ability to demonstrate sound judgment and analyzing problems logically and comprehensively, distinguishing between relevant and irrelevant information
  • Strong negotiation and persuasion skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment, as well as independently
  • Ability to handle sensitive/confidential matters in a tactful and discreet manner
  • Ability to interface with a variety of management levels & think creatively in seeking optimal solutions for clients

Nice To Haves

  • Hold or working towards an advanced degree (MST or JD with Tax Emphasis) preferred

Responsibilities

  • Serves as the day-to-day contact for clients.

  • Build long-term relationships with our clients, understanding their unique needs to provide a tailored service.
  • Communicate complex tax issues to non-tax professionals and clients.
  • Maintains knowledge of general economic and political trends of possible tax or other legislation that could affect the business climate.
  • Manages tax research, the accuracy of the conclusion reached and ensures proper documentation of researched matters.
  • Remains up to date with new technologies and leverages firm technology to maximize team productivity and efficiency.
  • Consistently demonstrate ownership and accountability for all assigned clients and projects.
  • Translate complex data from a range of sources into client-ready insights and deliverables.
  • Participates in firm’s practice development efforts through involvement with referral sources, community and industry activities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
