About The Position

MendenFreiman, LLP is seeking a Tax Controversy Associate who demonstrates dedication to client service and a strong commitment to providing high-quality legal counsel. This role is best suited for a detail-oriented and dependable attorney with 1–3 years of experience who is eager to take a hands-on responsibility in federal and state tax controversy matters. The position supports the firm’s Tax Controversy Practice and plays an integral role in delivering consistent, high-quality client service while reinforcing the firm’s standards for excellence, accountability, and collaboration. On a day-to-day basis, the Tax Controversy Associate works under the direction of the Tax Controversy Partner(s) and Senior Associate(s) and collaborates closely with attorneys across the firm, including Business & Real Estate and Trusts & Estates. The role offers meaningful client interaction, increasing responsibility, and exposure to a wide range of tax controversy matters, including audits, appeals, collections, and litigation. This position is well suited for candidates who value professionalism, teamwork, tenacity, and thoughtful, solutions-driven counsel to clients navigating complex and often stressful tax issues.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school
  • Admission to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction (Georgia preferred, but not required)
  • 1–3 years of experience in tax controversy, tax litigation, or related tax matters
  • Strong knowledge of federal tax procedure; state and local tax experience a plus
  • Experience interacting with the IRS (audits, appeals, collections, or litigation)
  • Excellent legal research, writing, and analytical skills
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple matters simultaneously
  • Professional, client-focused demeanor with strong communication skills
  • In-office attendance required

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with IRS Appeals or U.S. Tax Court proceeding
  • Prior experience at a law firm, accounting firm, government agency, or hands-on experience through the Philip C. Cook Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic at Georgia State University College of Law

Responsibilities

  • Represent individuals and business clients in federal and state tax disputes
  • Assist with IRS and state audits, appeals, and administrative proceedings
  • Prepare and review correspondence, protests, briefs, and settlement submissions
  • Handle tax collection matters, including liens, levies, installment agreements, and offers in compromise
  • Conduct legal research and draft memoranda on tax procedure and substantive tax issues
  • Support tax litigation matters, including U.S. Tax Court cases, as needed
  • Communicate directly with clients, taxing authorities, and opposing counsel in a professional and responsive manner
  • Collaborate with attorneys across practice groups on tax-related matters impacting business planning, estate planning, and transactions
  • Maintain organized, accurate matter files in accordance with firm procedures and quality standards
