About The Position

Hillyard, Inc. is seeking an experienced Tax Compliance Specialist to join their Accounting team in St. Joseph, MO. This role serves as the primary resource for sales and use tax compliance, involving collaboration with internal teams, customers, suppliers, tax authorities, and a third-party tax provider. The specialist will ensure accurate reporting, manage exemption documentation, support audits, and maintain compliance with evolving tax regulations.

Requirements

  • 2–4 years of experience in corporate tax, public accounting, or a related accounting role.
  • Sales and use tax experience strongly preferred.
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • Knowledge of state and local tax regulations, particularly sales and use tax.
  • Understanding of tax accounting, reconciliations, and financial reporting.
  • Strong analytical, research, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to identify potential compliance risks and recommend solutions.
  • Experience with tax software and ERP systems; Vertex experience is a plus.
  • Strong Excel and Microsoft Office skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail, organization, and follow-through.
  • Ability to manage multiple filings, deadlines, audits, and priorities independently.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to build productive relationships with internal teams, customers, suppliers, auditors, tax authorities, and outside tax professionals.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare, review, and reconcile monthly sales and use tax data using Vertex.
  • Review and approve state and local sales tax returns prepared by our third-party tax provider.
  • Prepare and file tax returns not handled by our outside provider.
  • Reconcile sales and use tax-related general ledger accounts.
  • Manage sales tax exemption certificates and review documentation for accuracy and validity.
  • Monitor supplier transactions for company use tax compliance.
  • Serve as the primary relationship manager with Vertex and coordinate tax application updates with our ERP system.
  • Coordinate and manage sales tax audits, including documentation and communication with auditors.
  • Complete tax and licensing applications as needed.
  • Monitor unclaimed property requirements and coordinate required filings.
  • Partner with our outside tax firm on state income tax estimates.
  • Manage W-9 and tax exemption certificate requests from internal teams, customers, and suppliers.
  • Research tax questions, identify potential compliance concerns, and recommend appropriate solutions.
