The North Carolina Department of Commerce, Division of Employment Security, is hiring a Tax Auditor to audit employers for compliance with North Carolina Employment Security laws. Audits cover contributory employers across business types, industries, sizes, and legal structures, from sole proprietorships and partnerships to corporations, nonprofits, estates, and LLCs. Auditors examine required employer financial records and render an opinion on behalf of NC DES regarding compliance and solvency. Assignments include selected, random, management, and converted audits, as well as internal detection referrals from the NC Government Data Analytic Center. Tax Auditors also enforce collection of delinquent taxes and investigate underground-economy activity, blocked-claim wage protests, status liability, Assistant Secretary Orders, and worthless checks. They work independently in the field, interviewing employers, employees, attorneys, accountants, and other designated parties to determine business operations and obtain information. When relevant records are not provided, the auditor may request that a Regional Tax Manager and Tax Audit Chief seek issuance of a Subpoena Duces Tecum. This is a full-time position of 40 hours per week with State Benefits. The recruitment range is $47,703–$70,107. The role requires working knowledge of Employment Security law and the Internal Revenue Code as applicable to entities, considerable knowledge of Employment Security law, and the ability to apply relevant state and federal laws to resolve unemployment insurance tax issues. Auditors must interpret complex laws and regulations, examine employer financial records, use Microsoft Office and DES-provided hardware and software, and adapt to accounting, auditing, and employer-specific software.
