Position Summary The Tax Attorney (Associate) is an entry-level opportunity for a recent law school graduate to build a career in tax law within Nichols Cauley. Working closely with and under the mentorship of senior tax attorneys and CPAs, this role provides hands-on experience in tax planning, structuring, and controversy support for high-net-worth individuals, closely held businesses, and their advisors. This is a unique opportunity to develop foundational legal tax skills while learning the collaborative, multi-disciplinary approach Nichols Cauley brings to its integrated service lines, working alongside CPAs, wealth advisors, and other professionals as part of a newly combined practice in the South Florida market.

Requirements

Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school.
Florida Bar admission required, or eligibility to sit for the Florida Bar with admission expected shortly after hire.
Coursework or an academic concentration in tax law strongly preferred (e.g., federal income tax, corporate tax, estate and gift tax).
Strong legal research, writing, and analytical skills.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain concepts clearly.
Eagerness to learn from and collaborate closely with senior attorneys, CPAs, and other financial professionals in a multi-disciplinary environment.
High degree of professionalism, attention to detail, and sound judgment.
Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.

Nice To Haves

LL.M. in Taxation, completed or in progress.
Prior internship, clerkship, or law school clinic experience in tax law, estate planning, or a related area.
Familiarity with tax research tools (e.g., CCH, Bloomberg Tax, Westlaw).
Interest in advising high-net-worth individuals and closely held businesses.
Interest in building a long-term career within a professional services or accounting firm environment in South Florida.

Responsibilities

Conduct legal research on federal, state, and local tax issues and prepare clear written memoranda summarizing findings and recommendations.
Assist senior attorneys and CPAs in drafting and reviewing tax technical documents
Support tax controversy matters under attorney/CPA supervision, including preparing responses to IRS and state tax authority inquiries, audits, and appeals.
Assist in analyzing the tax implications of mergers, acquisitions, and other business transactions, partnering with Nichols Cauley's Transaction Advisory team.
Collaborate with CPAs, tax preparers, and wealth advisors across Nichols Cauley's service lines to support integrated, multi-disciplinary tax strategies.
Help monitor developments in tax law and regulations, and assist in communicating relevant changes to the team.
Participate in client meetings and calls alongside senior attorneys to build client relationship and communication skills.
Contribute to the growth of the tax consulting practice including case management and administrative support.
Maintain strict confidentiality and the highest professional and ethical standards in all client matters, consistent with applicable bar and legal ethics rules.
Actively pursue professional development, including continuing legal education (CLE) and ongoing mentorship from senior tax attorneys.
