About The Position

The MITRE National Security Sector (MNS) and its National Security Engineering Center (NSEC) FFRDC solve the nation’s most complex security challenges across the Department of Defense, Intelligence Community, interagency partners, industry, and allies. The Naval Division (N230) is seeking a Task Leader for the Expeditionary & Asymmetric Operations Department, which advances expeditionary, land, and amphibious science and technology, and integrates uncrewed and autonomous systems with crewed vessels. This role ensures portfolio-level alignment, coordination, and execution of work that delivers lasting impact to the Navy, Marine Corps, and Joint Force.

Requirements

  • Typically requires a minimum of 8 years of related experience with a Bachelor's degree in Systems Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Engineering Management, Computer Science, Operations Research, Business Administration, or a related technical discipline; or Master's degree with 6 years of relevant experience; or a PhD with 3 years’ experience; or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Demonstrated experience applying systems engineering principles to support Department of Defense (DoD) acquisition, modernization, or systems integration efforts.
  • Experience conducting business process modeling, process analysis, and process improvement using structured methodologies (e.g., BPMN, Lean, value stream mapping, or similar).
  • Experience analyzing acquisition and contract documentation, including Statements of Work (SOWs), Performance Work Statements (PWSs), Requests for Proposals (RFPs), and technical requirements to support acquisition planning and decision-making.
  • Experience supporting DoD acquisition programs through technical analysis, requirements development, trade studies, risk assessments, and acquisition strategy recommendations.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Word), Microsoft Teams, SharePoint, and business process modeling or systems engineering tools.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, project leadership, and communication skills with demonstrated ability to lead multidisciplinary teams, manage multiple priorities, and effectively engage government stakeholders.
  • Familiarity with the DoD Adaptive Acquisition Framework (AAF), Defense Acquisition System, and systems engineering lifecycle processes.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret clearance.
  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • This position requires a minimum of 50% hybrid on-site presence.

  • Experience leading technical teams supporting Department of Defense (DoD) acquisition, systems engineering, or capability modernization programs.
  • Experience working within or supporting a Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC), or Government Program Office (GPO).
  • Knowledge of the DoD Adaptive Acquisition Framework (AAF), Defense Acquisition System, and acquisition lifecycle processes, including requirements development, technical evaluations, and source selection support.
  • Experience supporting networked systems, enterprise architectures, command and control (C2), communications, or other mission-critical defense capabilities.
  • Familiarity with Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE), DoDAF, SysML, BPMN, or other systems engineering and business process modeling methodologies.
  • Demonstrated ability to build trusted relationships with senior government sponsors and stakeholders, lead cross-functional technical teams, and deliver mission-focused solutions in complex acquisition environments.
  • Active Secret clearance

Responsibilities

  • Lead a cross-functional technical team supporting DoD acquisition and modernization initiatives, ensuring high-quality execution, schedule adherence, and customer satisfaction.
  • Conduct business process modeling and analysis using industry-standard methodologies (e.g., BPMN, UML, SysML, value stream mapping) to document current-state operations, identify inefficiencies, and define future-state processes.
  • Analyze acquisition strategies, Statements of Work (SOWs), Performance Work Statements (PWSs), Requests for Proposals (RFPs), and contract documentation to assess technical feasibility, performance requirements, and acquisition risks.
  • Apply systems engineering principles throughout the acquisition lifecycle, including requirements analysis, architecture development, trade studies, risk assessment, and verification planning.
  • Execute stakeholder workshops, process discovery sessions, and technical reviews with government sponsors, operational users, contractors, and engineering teams.
  • Produce executive-level briefings, technical reports, decision memoranda, and acquisition documentation that communicate complex analyses to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Mentor junior engineers and analysts while fostering collaboration, technical excellence, and knowledge sharing across project teams.
  • Manage task schedules, resource allocation, technical quality, and customer engagement activities to ensure successful delivery of program objectives.
