About The Position

The YMCA of Southwestern Ontario, founded in 1856, is a large not-for-profit organization with over 200 locations across Southwestern Ontario. They are one of the largest providers of licensed child care in Canada, offering over 100 school-age programs, settlement services, employment programs, mental health support, and youth programs. The YMCA also operates two overnight camps and 15 Health & Fitness branches. This Tai Chi Instructor position is located at the StarTech.com Community Centre, YMCA and Library, with a start date of July 2026 and a salary of $25.00 per hour. The role involves leading Tai Chi classes, ensuring participant safety, creating lesson plans, and fostering a positive learning environment.

Requirements

  • Completion of Tai Chi instructor training programs (e.g., Yang, Chen, Sun, or Wu styles)
  • Formal training or certification in Tai Chi from a recognized school, association, or instructor
  • CPR and First Aid certification (required or preferred depending on setting)

Nice To Haves

  • Coursework or education in kinesiology, physical education, health sciences, or wellness is an asset
  • Training in anatomy, movement science, or injury prevention (preferred)
  • Experience or education related to mindfulness, meditation, or mind–body practices (asset)
  • Continuing professional development in Tai Chi or related wellness disciplines

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate proper posture, breathing techniques, and movement sequences
  • Lead Tai Chi classes for individuals or groups following recognized Tai Chi principles and forms
  • Modify movements to accommodate different fitness levels, ages, injuries, or chronic conditions
  • Ensure participant safety by monitoring form, balance, and physical limitations
  • Create lesson plans aligned with wellness, rehabilitation, or recreational goals
  • Encourage mindfulness, stress reduction, and mind–body awareness
  • Maintain a welcoming, respectful, and inclusive learning environment
  • Track attendance and participant progress when required
  • Set up and maintain a clean, safe practice space
  • Communicate clearly with participants regarding class expectations and techniques
  • Comply with organizational policies, health guidelines, and safety standards
