Job Title: Tahltan Environmental Steward Reporting to the Environmental Manager or delegate, the Tahltan Environmental Stewards plays a stewardship‑focused role that supports the respectful care of land, water, and wildlife within Tahltan Territory. This position brings Tahltan knowledge, lived experience, and community perspectives into daily environmental and site activities, helping ensure that work is carried out in a manner that reflects Tahltan values, responsibilities to the land, and commitments to future generations. The Monitor serves as a vital connector between Skeena’s operational teams and Tahltan cultural and environmental priorities, contributing to responsible project practices and strengthened Nation–industry collaboration.

Requirements

Degree or diploma in Environmental Science, Biology, Ecology, Natural Resource Management, or a related field.
A minimum of 2+ years of experience in environmental monitoring, preferably in the mining or construction sector.
Strong understanding of British Columbia’s environmental regulations, permitting requirements, and industry best practices.
Experience working respectfully with Indigenous Nations or local communities, particularly in a field-based or operational setting.
Awareness of social, cultural, and community considerations associated with resource development projects.
Strong listening skills and the ability to raise concerns in a constructive, solution-oriented manner.
Demonstrated respect for confidentiality, cultural sensitivity, and community protocols.
Experience with environmental sampling methods, data analysis, and reporting.
Knowledge of erosion and sediment control measures, water quality monitoring, and wildlife protection protocols.
Ability to work in a remote, field-based environment with variable weather conditions.
Detail oriented with excessive attention to detail

Responsibilities

Apply Tahltan knowledge systems, land‑based teachings, and community perspectives to support Skeena’s environmental planning and onsite activities, ensuring these insights appropriately inform Skeena’s decisions and day‑to‑day practices.
Participate in Skeena’s predisturbance planning by sharing Tahltan knowledge of culturally important areas, traditional plants, wildlife, and seasonal land uses, helping Skeena identify opportunities to avoid or minimize disturbance wherever possible.
Support and facilitate site-based initiatives and programs related to knowledge sharing, culture and community building, stewardship, and education, under the guidance of the Environmental Compliance Superintendent.
Act as a respectful conduit for sharing Tahltan community perspectives with Skeena site teams, helping raise awareness of community interests, sensitivities, and expectations related to environmental and social activities.
Support Skeena’s culturally appropriate engagement on site by sharing awareness of relevant protocols, seasonal activities, and culturally important areas.
Assist Skeena in documenting community‑related observations or concerns that may inform environmental planning, mitigation measures, and relationship‑building efforts.
Prepare bi‑weekly reports for the Environmental Manager, which may be shared by Skeena with the Tahltan Central Government and Tahltan communities as appropriate.
Conduct environmental sampling, monitoring, and compliance activities as directed by Skeena, in alignment with the collaboratively developed Environmental Management Plans and Environmental Management System. This includes water, soil, vegetation, wildlife, and erosion‑control monitoring.
Accompany consultants in the field to support Skeena’s Environmental Management System (EMS) activities and ensure fieldwork is conducted in accordance with Skeena’s procedures and the collaboratively developed Environmental Management Plans.
Maintain accurate records and documentation of environmental conditions and activities in accordance with Skeena’s compliance requirements and the monitoring and reporting expectations established under Article 6.
Consider community and traditional land‑use sensitivities when planning or conducting monitoring activities and communicate any potential concerns to Skeena’s Environmental and Social Performance teams so they can be incorporated into Skeena’s environmental management and mitigation processes.
Support Skeena’s construction and operations activities by providing environmental monitoring and guidance in accordance with Skeena’s Environmental Management Plans and Environmental Management System.
Identify and promptly escalate potential compliance risks or non‑compliances to Skeena’s Environmental Specialists, Environmental Compliance Superintendent, and/or Environmental Manager, consistent with Skeena’s obligations under Article 6.
Support the identification and escalation of community‑related environmental concerns or complaints to Skeena’s Environmental and Social Performance teams, particularly where issues may have social or reputational implications.
Review and provide input on SOPs, work instructions, bulletins, templates, and other materials that support Skeena’s Environmental Management System and reflect the collaborative environmental framework under Article 6.
Contribute to the ongoing stewardship and improvement of Skeena’s Environmental Management System and related processes, supporting adaptive management and continuous improvement commitments under Article 6.
Contribute to the sharing and reporting of information with Indigenous partners by ensuring information is clear, respectful, and reflective of community priorities.
Support learning and awareness for site personnel related to environmental responsibilities, Tahltan culture, and respectful conduct on Tahltan Territory, fostering mutual learning, respect, and accountability.
Promote a culture of respect, learning, and accountability when working within Tahltan Territory.
Share environmental knowledge and traditional values with staff and contractors as appropriate.
Work in environmental and compliance systems including EQuis, IsoMetrix, Survey123, SharePoint, ArcGIS, Avenza, and Smartsheet.
Support data management and documentation in line with compliance and reporting requirements.
Support documentation and tracking of environmental observations that have potential community, cultural, or social relevance, in alignment with internal reporting processes.
Provide occasional office-based support of compliance activities as directed by the Environmental Compliance Superintendent or Environmental Manager.
Support cross-functional collaboration with Skeena teams (Environment & Social Affairs) as required.
