About The Position

WFEC is hiring for either a Systems Technician - System Protection or Journeyman Systems Technician - System Protection, at the hiring official’s option. Under the direct supervision of the Systems Technicians Supervisor, the technician supports electrical, electronic, and communications systems used to control, protect, and maintain the transmission system. Technicians specialize in one area but may be required to support the other specialty area. Areas include electromechanical and microprocessor-based relays, substation automation, and metering. Work includes maintaining, repairing, installing, and calibrating specialized equipment and systems. The Journeyman role requires at least one year at the Systems Technician level, in addition to its stated education or experience requirements. Both roles require system-protection work, including installation, repair, and calibration of metering, relaying, and substation automation components; troubleshooting system problems; configuring and programming meters and relays; commissioning and testing substations or switch stations; overseeing contractors; supporting communications functions; coordinating clearances and switching orders; documenting applicable NERC compliance work; and maintaining safe and orderly tools, equipment, and work areas. The position requires residence within 30 miles of the specified work location. Schedules may include overtime, weekends, holidays, extensive overnight travel, and overnight travel on short notice. The role is classified as safety sensitive. Work may involve varying outdoor weather and indoor temperature and humidity conditions, confined spaces, high voltages, and nighttime work indoors or outdoors in all weather conditions. Applicants must meet all physical and environmental requirements. Applications are accepted through November 23, 2026, at www.wfec.com.
