About The Position

The Building Automation / Controls Technician Intern is responsible for installing, wiring, programming, commissioning, and troubleshooting HVAC control systems. This role works closely with engineering, project management, electricians, and other trades to ensure control systems are installed per design, operate as intended, and meet project requirements. The position supports Distech-based control systems, Alerton Control system, networking, and field devices across air and water systems.

Responsibilities

  • Gain a working knowledge of installed control devices, required wiring, and overall device functionality.
  • Understand proper sensor selection and installation for different HVAC applications (e.g., averaging sensors, duct sensors, VAV applications).
  • Understand device capabilities and confirm suitability for intended system use.
  • Install, wire, and program control panels, Distech controllers, Alerton controllers, sensors, actuators, relays, and related field devices.
  • Replace or repair existing sensors, actuators, and relays as needed.
  • Create and interpret detailed wiring diagrams for common HVAC control components.
  • Coordinate wire pulls and field terminations with electricians.
  • Begin laying out Air Handling Units (AHUs) and water-based HVAC systems following industry best practices.
  • Understand system types including VAV, Fan Powered Boxes (FPB), and VAV with reheat.
  • Interpret and understand mechanical and electrical construction drawings.
  • Launch controller code via web interface for Distech Eclypse controllers.
  • Access Niagara, Alerton systems to load and manage controller programs.
  • Perform Point-to-Point (P2P) checkout to verify sensor accuracy and output operation.
  • Follow and understand control logic within GFX and Visual Logic programming environments.
  • Understand HVAC operational modes such as economizer cooling, mechanical cooling, and heating.
  • Assist engineering and project teams with on-site troubleshooting of control logic, hardware, and software issues.
  • Connect and integrate non-Distech/Alerton devices into control networks.
  • Assist with field terminations, point mapping, and verification.
  • Troubleshoot network communication issues related to IP and BACnet MSTP.
  • Provide daily progress updates to supervisors and project lead.
  • Act as the primary point of contact on smaller installation-only projects.
  • Communicate consistently with the Engineering department regarding field conditions and issues.
  • Submit equipment and material requests with supervisor approval.
  • Coordinate ordering of non-job-specific materials such as wire nuts, connectors, and mounting hardware.
  • Demonstrate appropriate jobsite behavior and maintain professional interactions with subcontractors and fellow contractors.
  • Attend toolbox talks and safety meetings as required.
  • Review and follow detailed training documentation from the Design Hardware and Software Engineering teams.
  • Participate in formal and informal training on system operation, sequencing, and programming standards.
  • Support continuous improvement through ongoing learning and field experience.
  • Perform additional related duties as assigned to support project completion and team objectives.
