Systems Software Engineer, Hardware Validation

Voyant Photonics•New York, NY
•$110,000 - $170,000•Onsite

About The Position

Voyant Photonics is hiring Systems Software Engineers at more than one level to keep its rapidly changing, multi-layer technology stack integrated, tested, and releasable. The stack includes FPGA and ASIC logic, microcontroller firmware, Linux drivers, and cross-platform user-facing APIs. The role calls for sound judgment about software organization and test coverage, willingness to advocate for technical opinions, and openness to revising them based on evidence. The engineer will own product releases from commit through delivery, expand hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) continuous integration across subsystems and new products, investigate and fix bugs across software and hardware boundaries, and integrate products into customer systems and relevant open-source ecosystems. The position is based primarily in person at Voyant’s Midtown Manhattan lab and office, with a flexible schedule that may involve early or late customer calls across time zones.

Requirements

  • At least 2 years of software engineering experience, or equivalent depth from research, internships, or serious personal projects; scope will be adjusted to experience.
  • Strong Python skills and comfort debugging languages not used every day.
  • Hands-on hardware experience, including bring-up, reading schematics, and using lab instruments to distinguish software bugs from board bugs.
  • CI/CD experience, ideally involving real hardware.
  • Proactive communication and care for documentation that supports cross-functional team members and customers.

Nice To Haves

  • Rust, C++, or embedded C experience; the team uses STM32.
  • Linux device-driver experience, especially SPI and custom low-level interfaces.
  • Ability to read System Verilog well enough to debug across the FPGA boundary.
  • Experience with HIL rigs and lab automation, including SCPI/VISA and self-hosted CI runners.
  • Timing and signal-integrity debugging across SPI, I2C, UART, Ethernet, and JTAG/SWD, as well as board rework.
  • Fiber optics and optical test equipment experience.
  • Datacenter networking, PTP, point clouds, or ROS 2 experience.
  • Experience supporting software that external customers depend on.

Responsibilities

  • Own releases from commit to customer, including building, verifying, versioning, and shipping product bundles such as FPGA bitstreams, firmware, drivers, and APIs.
  • Manage field updates and produce release notes and runbooks.
  • Expand HIL CI coverage to every subsystem and integrate each new product starting with its first bring-up board.
  • Trace bugs identified by CI to their root causes across Python, Rust, firmware, Linux drivers, and FPGA logic, and fix them.
  • Integrate products into customer systems involving time synchronization, calibration, and sensor fusion, and into open-source ecosystems such as OCP and ROS.
  • Collaborate with hardware, optics, signal processing, and perception engineers and contribute to technical direction.
  • Document work to support cross-functional team members and customers.

Benefits

  • Catered lunch every day at headquarters.
  • Flexible scheduling around customer calls across time zones.
  • Opportunity for ownership of release and test architecture, close cross-functional collaboration, and influence over technical direction.
